Should I be using auto best?
If I dont want to spend time creating ship designs and I just want something that can be good in a fight?

Theres auto best and there is auto upgrade. Auto best uses the AI's pants on head logic to design your ships for you. Auto upgrade replaces new higher tier parts in your ship as you unlock them. So you go form armor tier 2 to armor tier 3, your design is automatically updated.

Design your ship. Then select auto upgrade. If you aren't willing to put that much time into making sure your ship is made right then Stellaris isn't the game for you.

auto best will happily give you a default navy armed with only point defence.
Autobest is ok for the start, but will soon result in less than ideal designs or ones ill-equipped to face your neighbours.

It just means your trying to brute force it rather than spend 30 seconds doing it yourself.

E.g Kinetic+ Energy is always solid.
Always good to have some point defense ships as well.

Basically, the first poster was right - turn off auto best, make your own ship designs and check "auto upgrade" before saving them. From then on, anything you've put on them will be replaced with the best and newest version (assuming power is available) whenever you upgrade.

Use autobest with extreme caution. You might end up with fleets with nothing but trash weapons.

It works fine at the start but as you unlock more equipment it breaks down. Like people have said already, it can do silly things like spend all of your points on point defense and give you zero weapons.

This doesn't matter until you start having more and more options available, since early on you're likely to only have minor weapon or armor upgrades and the auto system will easily manage just slapping them in there for you.

Honestly, turn auto best off immediately at game start.

It doesn't work with the flee manager at all.

To limit micro, just create a new design as soon as you unlock it, deleting the auto design. Then when you want to upgrade just click auto complete and save and you're done.

i have had this issue and i have to agree with the majority of comments.
auto best doesnt work well for long.
auto upgrade on the other hand is amazing.
as long as you play it smart your ships should outclass the galaxy.

Auto-best is terrible if you let it design one ship for every class.

If you pick the ship sections yourself, then let auto-best do the rest, the result is much better.

I just realized after a hundred hours that autobest is horrible... I had a 30k power station and it had problems taking down 2-3k fleets... I checked and it was all low tier small range ♥♥♥♥♥♥ weapons... Also half my fleet was equipped only with point defense, I guess on the long run this cost me my game :( (Didn't lose it yet but it's not far away... )

Personaly getting new ship types and designing fleets is one of the best parts of the game for me :3 It's also a good idea to test out fleet designs and see how they perform, I often use the leviathons for that XD

Yeah, I have never designed a non-Colossus ship, and can beat all my enemies. 300+ hours and never wasted my time on designing my ship, it’s not important if you have the right economy. Plus the AI sucks.
