We should be able to destroy gateways
The fact that I'm sitting here trying to reclaim a former Unbidden system and the Unbidden keep piling through the abandoned gateway costing me influence every time I try to build a station is really starting to wear on me.

Spoiler alert? ... I'm pretty sure your fleets will attack their portal after you've finished fighting off all the fleets they're sending through. You might just think they're done.. when they're really not.

how is it costing you influence?

No, gateway. Not portal. The buildable megastructure gateways. The AI AE's built gateways in systems then lost them to the Unbidden. While I did destroy the Unbidden's station in the system, unclaimed systems that have gateways are stupidly annoying to capture because the unclaimed gateways are open to everyone. You can't destroy the megastructures, which is what I'm asking for us to be able to do. You must capture the system with a station in order to claim the system and stop the incoming Unbidden that pour through the gateway. Every time you try to build a station to capture a system it costs influence. If an enemy fleet appears in the system you're trying to build a station in, your construction ship stops construction AND you lose the influence you spent.

I spent over one hundred years trying to capture a system that would prove to be a strong defensive system to defend the galaxy's north while I then focus on the south. Longest battle I've ever had to fight. If I could ruin the megastructure, it would have stopped the Unbidden from sending a fleet every time I was almost finished building the station.

Destructable megastructures in general need to be a thing. I'm not saying make it easy, but make it possible without console commands.

Possibly requiring the use of a colossus.

As long as the colossus continues to fire even when under attack, this is a perfectly reasonable solution.

you shouldn't lose influence if the construction ship cancels the job. but you could set the construction ship to passive so it won't flee and then keep your fleet at the gateway so that hopefully the fight doesn't get near the construction ship while it finishes up.

You lose the station's influence cost (and all progress towards the station) if an enemy arrives in the system while you are trying to construct a station, passive or not, because one of the requirements to construct a station is there cannot be enemies in the system.

I feel your pain but frankly, don't expect anything on this from PDX any time soon ^^' .

As soon as any empire grabs the system, the Unbidden shouldn't be able to go through it, them being hostile to everyone.

The issue is the difficulty in being fast enough at grabbing the system after the Unbidden are banished from it before the Unbidden go through the open-to-everyone gateway.

While I agree gateways should have some way to destroy them, in this particular case all you need to do is park a fleet on the gateway and set the construction ship to ignore hostiles.

Go do that and you'll realise what I'm saying in this thread.

Destroying gateways should 100% be an option. The contingency forces just pop out of any gateway and wipe 90% of my forces as they pass by...

Yeah you got a point, if we can destroy planets, Megastructures should be destructible or atleast deactivateable too.

For smaller megastructures like the Gateway (it is not mega in size but in the technological benefit) you shouldn't even need a colossus, a normal fleet with a power of something like around 100K should be able to destroy it themselves.

i'd require a colossus if i was allowing it, otherwise it's way too easy to grief other players if you can get to their gateways
