Defence Platforms/Ion Cannons
Do the upgrades for the Defence Platforms work on the Ion Cannons also?

Defense platforms are much more customizable, but less powerful against larger ships. Ion-cannons come with a titan laser capable of dealing massive damage to hard-targets like cruisers and battleships, but are otherwise defenseless.

The ion Cannon platforms have a large amount of hp and can hold just as many slots as the defense platforms. I do believe that the Ion Cannon platforms gain bonus hp from the hp research.

They do. But their only weapon slot is for the titan laser. They're quite durable, its just they cannot do anything about corvettes, whom they cannot hit.

Yeah but the station can hit the corvettes and you can't fill the platform limit with ion cannons as there isn't enough slots so some platforms will be defense platforms anyways.

True. Usually what ends up happening in most games.

They only receive +10% platform HP and +10% platform Damage repeated tech bonuses, because T slot is not related to Kinetic or Energy weapon.

When I see how much alloy I have to cough up for an ion cannon platform, my balls shrivel.

Ecumenopolii for the win!

Still in most cases def platforms are waste of resources. Only if you're expecting overwhelming force to arrive in that system (AE I'm looking on you!) or it's TOO important (like your ecumenopolis or Terminal Egress). In any other case I think more wise to put this alloys into more ships & gateways.

Agreed. It usually a sounder investment to build fleets. I only build defensive structures when I have excess resources that are not going into megastructure production, so defensive platforms are low on the list of priorities.

Yeah I noticed that too, I've had an enemy fleet jump into my system and I completely wrecked them, BUT somehow I still lose most of the Citadel's platforms in just a few seconds. They're just so weak.

Bear in mind that basic defensive platforms are not supposed to be very strong. They're supposed to be cheap. I don't know how they compare in that field, I haven't checked in a while.

But they aren't that cheap either, especially when you can get 28 or whatever per citadel.

IMHO def platforms should get large discount on components (so they aren't dirt cheap in early game, but not became expensive in late), plus zero alloy maintenance cost.

Or massive buff to durability (and maybe to damage too).

Zero maintanence costs, yes, definitly, at least with alloys.

Discounts...I'm conflicted. On one hand they are a bit more expensive than corvettes, making corvettes more viable to build. And corvettes are mobile, whereas platforms are not. However in raw damage absorbtion, a single platform has more than a single corvette and would likely win vs a single corvette.

But they do need to be made useful so...maybe making them roughly the same price as a corvette, depending on the components? Bear in mind a platform can have an entire plethora of different modules from S to L to T or H. That might be why they are more expensive.
