Research Rate?
I'm getting out paced by AI on normal for research rate. I have about +100% research rate thanks to edicts, traits, ascension, etc, compiling everything I can to increase the rate of discovery. Yet, the AI always seems to research things faster. My people are unhappy because I'm not at equivalent or lower.

They made one difficultly with no AI cheats, but that’s no fun.

Well that's annoying, because you get a science faction that is annoyed if other empires are ahead of you. So that's basically sacrificing a happy population there because you'll never be able to be ahead of them. Without mods I suppose.

Now if only I could get some that could level the playing field...

Again - what difficulty you're playing?

Because there's one where AI will finish with insane buffs (or even start with them). Obliviously it's require a bit different gameplay and civ.

As science-based civ your goal is to have science nexus online around ~2300. So it's mean that you aren't doing well.

Its only normal, lol.

Science Nexus at 2300? yikes. I only just finished a habitat, lol. I'm almost to megastructures, but not quite there. X-x

Science nexus by 2300 is not a good intermediate goal for people getting into it. 2350 is a more relaxed and achievable goal - though looking for ways to accelerate everything is never bad. I'd even recommend not trying to min-max and just enjoy going through everything along the way.

In my experience - don't expect to plop down a science nexus fully down by 2300. Even though I'm sure people can do it.

I got Psionic Theory in 2214 not even playing Spiritualist or having psionic scientist.

Then play more and learn :)

AI on normal is completely toothless and barely able to defend himself vs pirates.

That's some pretty good luck, if you were wanting to go the psionic ascension path. I've sometimes had to wait quite some time as a spiritualist, I think maniacal scientist to help boost things (forget if it helps).

My first game of 2.0, my first scientist I hired was a psionic, and I got Psionic Theory at year 7 (2207). I was Fanatic Spiritualist.

I plan to go Psionic Ascension, I already took Mind over Matter in that game.

My last game - I planned to go Bionic Assension first time in my life and taken Materialists... 2 psionic researchers in first century, one of them genius and PT ~ around 2260.

Well I mean I got mine pretty early on I think it was like 2285 or something but then again I have a pretty large expanded empire controlling the top right of the galaxy with a federation in power of the north of the galaxy. Then again I do have science all the way down so not much suprise there.

If you want to please the materialist faction you just need to build labs to increase research, and colonize worlds in your territory. Each world is only a 5% science penalty, so more worlds with more labs quickly increases your research rate. Expanding into a wide base of territory without building up the planets within will rack up a huge penalty and get you behind - each system is 2%.

As an example, lets say I am just blowing influence left and right and I claim 25 systems within the first few years. That's a 50% increase in base research cost without that much extra science to make up for it (unless you got crazy lucky with the orbital resources). As part of this I also colonized 3 worlds. So my total penalty is 65% base - a tech that costs 10000 now costs 16500. I build some science buildings and end up producing 30 science on each of these new planets and my homeworld is making 30 too, and for arguments sake we'll say 1 research per orbital system. and producing around 145 science. So it takes me about 114 months to get the 10000 point research.

Then person B has the same environment as me. He just goes straight for the nearby worlds and doesn't expand out further - he took 5 systems and the same 3 planets. He builds the same science buildings and etc. He's making around 125 science, since he didn't get the research bonuses on some of those systems. Yet he's researching faster. His cost is only 12500 for the 10000 point tech. He can research it in 100 months.

I cant ever seem to counter ship types effectively. Right now one empire seems to spam missiles and disruptors, which is pretty annoying.

I thought point defense was worthless right now. Last I heard you were better off trying to outdamage them.
