how do you change portraits mid game? There is a console-command called "portraits" but I don`t know how to use it. Does anyone know?

Yeah, what is the point of designing your leader in the beginning, if he/she is going to die well before even the midgame crisis from old age?! XD

There really should be something in place that allows you to customize new leaders.

The species that can only have different colours, you should also be able to assign certain colours to only one gender maybe?
So that if you're not playing as a human species, you can still tell if it's a male or female...
Would definitely help with roleplaying abilities ^^

If you choose biolgical ascension path you can change portrait when modifying a species, but it is limited only in the same phenotype, for example avian species can change to other avian species portrait, but you can't change it into mamalian or moluscoid.

Perhaps it's possible to edit your savegame file. The graphic asset is surely referenced there.
