I captured an opposing empire's final planet, not realizing it was their last one (they had a lot of territory I hadn't explored).
The other systems became neutral, and the outposts became "Abandoned Outposts". I thought I could capture them by flying into them, but they just disappeared on approach. :(
I was then able to able to build outposts on them the same as with neutral stars, so effectively they become uninhabited territory, which was bad because it's a lot more expensive to build outposts and mining bases than to flip them.
Nope the remaining outposts and stations just vanish, if you get claims way cheaper then building new outposts (with the right ethics and techs its likely) make sure to grab as much of their territory with that final war.
Remember this was right after 2.0 came out this thread, I am sure they have found that out.
Some might feel just letting them dissapear is better so you can scan them yourself with fresh chances for anomalies ^^
Except you're giving any other empires the chance to claim them before you do.
Chances are there won't be much new to scan, since sectors tend to keep the same scanning state that the previous empire that held them had.
