Starvation is the most retarded game concept
Liek seriously you have -1 food/month then you go below 0 food suddenly BOOM 100 Unrest everywhere your pops refuse to produce ANYTHING EVEN ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ FOOD und suddenly you are at -25 food. Who the ♥♥♥♥ designed this ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥? Seriously why would they all suddenly stop PRODUCING FOOD when THEY ARE HUNGRY?!

Yeah, the bad game design regarding food also affects the AI. I've had to ship everything from 5+ to 20+ food to starving neighbours because of it.

Sometimes I wonder whether Paradox actually bothers playing their own games or if they're just putting them out and waiting for us to point out all the bugs for them...

Because when there is famine people go work in the fields, and totally not starting to kill, rob and pillage. Yeah

Stellaris players should seriously stop whining on the forums each time they are salty because they failed at doing something in their game. It has become too common to come here, post something like "XXXX SO BAD FIX IT PARADOX!!!!!!!!!!!!!??????????".
Next time, calm down first, then think a bit about what happened.

Now the answer: starvation shouldn't happen to begin with. You are supposed to keep big sticks of food so you can find a way to get some food. If you're stuck while your empire is starving, you should try to buy some food to another empire and build some farms. If you can't, you failed at empire management and it's game over. But again, if you managed to cause mass starvation you likely did something wrong.

What, you gonna tell me to just go off and learn the game!? Well too bad, I already spent ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ 2 years learning the bloody game, now that has all went out the window and I honestly don't feel like spending the next month or so learning the game to get back to the skill level I was at before!

sorry but, some people should really play Tetris instead,
never ever I was able that my pops starve , you really have to be incompetent to do that !
LOL

What and you already played it 2 years ? Oh god !
What @AlienSpectator already said ...

next time ASK WHAT TO DO and don't BLAME PARADOX that it is to hard ...
it would be the same, if I would write in any ACTION EGO SHOOTER that it is to fast, but I know that I am to slow ...

food handling is the most simple economic part in the game

just keep track of your food income and relocate some pops to farms when the number turns negative. or build new farms if there aren't enough to feed your whole population. it will also switch color to red for convenience.

at -1 income, it takes 200 months (~16 years) to go from full to negative. building a new farm takes only a few months. you have plenty of time to react to a food shortage.

it's not rocket science.

You folks need to stop whining about him pointing out a legitemate issue.
It doesn't make sense that 200 pops get 40-50 unrest because there is a tiny 3-4 food shortage.

I haven't had starvation either, but I've seen AI's pretty much starve to death because someone conquered their food production planets, leaving unable to recover either because of bad AI decision making regarding what to build, or lack of resources.

In my view, food shortage should slowly kill of populations based upon how large the shortage is. i.e. 5 food shortage and 0 food storage = 5 pops slowly dying off and loosing all produtivity, similar to a purge.

Pops in food-production facilities, should be the last ones to be affected by shortages, unless they are slaves or something like that.

whats the matter with today's gamers???

Even in the socialists countries when people started rioting, looting and burning, they avoided the bakeries because they knew they needed them intact

I have over 1000h of Stellaris counted since launch. Not once in that time, including my current 2.0 gameplays, did I go to zero food or below. How hard is it on start of a match first to raise the food storage to maximum and then keep an eye on the counter and build friggin farms if your surplus drops below +5? If you have -20 Energy, do you build more mines for minerals??

Remember how RL people start wrecking their city because their favourite sport team has won a important match? You really expect billions of colonists to behave when they are starving to death with no hope in sight because their government leaders (you!) are seemingly incompetent in their job? If your colonies revolt in Unrest because of starving, you can only blame yourself. Not the developer.

Next up in the news: Dark Souls is friggin punishing! Devs are to blame for making the game unfair for people who are using their feet instead of their hands to operate their keyboard.

To be fair, this is an issue, while im happy bulding farm planets to make sure i never get starvation, always felt odd that -1 food instantly screws you over.

Though if you are struggling with the 200 cap, there is the 1000 food cap option.

Not that i even see a point in a food cap to be fair, again, seemed a wierd choice to cap food when they made it nationwide usage rather than planet by planet. One wrong expansioin phase forgetting the surplus you have (or dont) and ... riots.

Though this is possibly the bottom of my list of quirky design choices atm.

Fleet cap and ship cap are doing my nut in right now. That and the unintuative, auto update civvy ships, how do i know they have been upgraded? Maybe i want specific shielding or boosts on them.. Really annoying that was taken from us. I like my micro managment.
