We don't fear impotence and overcompensation. As our capable admirals will demonstrate.
No reverse-engineering, either!
Going straight for the black hole in the galactic center?
Just fighting without compensating for something. Indiscriminate destruction is the last resort of the cowardly and the weak.
Lord Commander Solar Macharius
ALL HAIL THE EMPEROR!
Funnily enough, we are also a Divine Cult empire :D
It's just that we like living xenos, because they pay taxes, whereas dead ones don't. Plus, them planets are good tourist destinations. Err, did I say "tourist". I meant "pilgrimage". Yes. Pilgrimage.
Given you maintain a steady/forced population growth you can replace those vile alients with pious citizens that also pay taxes!
That may take a while but in the end the money you get is not tainted!
As for great places of pilgrimage, nothing serves this as well as "This Giant Rock holds testament to the our ultimate will and that those that act against it will be reduced to ash."
Blowing up a planet wouldn't definitely be a problem
Just saying the fear will keep them in line thing hasn't really worked historically.
― Sun Tzu, The Art of War
All destroying a world shows is that you are reckless with your power and a threat to everyone that must be dealt with, uniting all against you.
edit:
Blowing up a world is cerainly fighting.
Uhm... NOTHING has historically worked for we have failed systems for pretty much ANY model of society that ever existed. Heck, tomorrow all western democracies may fail and even if they persists for another 100 years they have not "beaten" other systems or proven to be superior.
Pffft sectors are just food we grow.
This are delicious human juiceboxes im talking about!
