Whirlwind Missiles
Does anyone use these? I'm wondering if they're worth giving them a shot for maybe a slot or two on a cruiser, not focusing on them but utilizing them.

I've used them. They're not a bad thing to have. If yu have a LOT of missles firing anyway (like a full fleet using nothing but explosives) these are overkill. But they are nice when you're using mixed weapon types.

They have better survivabilty than regular missiles against PD. Not a huge difference that I have seen, but some.

I really like the flavor of them, having a small missile barrage to try and overwhelm the enemy, complemented by a steady kinetic and laser assault. I may try it just for fun. I really have no idea how much the AI uses PD though, I've never actually used missiles.

Not the best end game weapon but not the worst either.

I usually do a mix of plasma and gauss, but building the same ships over and over gets boring.

Hmm the AI doesnt use PD in my gamesm but their ships do consist of 75% flak weaponry... for some reason.

Missiles are strictly inferior to anything else barring strike craft. Just try a fleet with even weapon loadout and see for yourself which weapons rack up most damage.

I have avoided all missiles for awhile, I've heard they suck. Never tried it out though. I was hoping whirlwind missiles wouldn't be as bad though.

Flak is a point defense weapon, it's just in a Medium slot instead of a PD slot. It's a magnitude of effectiveness beyond pd slot weapons. You can basically stick one on each ship class and not have to worry too much about missiles.

Yeah true, but them using over half of their slots on flak, makes the AI rather easy to beat, just dont use missles and boom.

Perhaps flak should be nerfed? Missiles in my opinion should have a soft counter, like pd seems to be where it can stop missiles but can be overwhelmed, but flak is such a hard counter it makes missiles untenable later.

Flak isn't really the main issue. Slow missile speed means a lot of firepower is wasted because the target is destroyed a long time before the missile reaches it.

slaver wars anyone? the answer for better missiles would be "sublight missiles" who would be alot faster than the normal type;)

Missiles are the worst in the game for a reason. #1 they only target one ship at a time #2 they get shot down before they reach a ship which the others dont have a problem with. #3 They overkill every ship by like 3 or 4x the ships hp. There are a few other reasons to but these alone make them far worse then any other weapon type. While they might have been buffed in utopia they definitely are not good enough to use still since the main reasons they are bad have not been fixed or altered in any way.

I know pre untopia i only used missiles for like my first 500 hrs since i thought the idea of humans going into space with nukes seemed awesome but i noticed something. When a fleet of missile ships attacks a fleet of kenetic ships and the are both the exact same power the missiles will lose every time with more then 50% of the kenetic fleet remaining. Its that big of a problem. Kenetic is is best in my opinion since it gives a bonus damage to shields and armor with no negatives and later on with the giga cannon and kenetic artillery they are miles ahead of any other weapon type.

Flak is absolutely an issue. Take 20 cruisers armed with flak artillery and 20 battleships armed with only large tier 5 missiles. See how long it takes the battleships to destroy the cruisers. In the sandbox test I did it took 3 years and the cruisers killed 3 of the battleships, which were plated with tier 2 crystal and had 90 armor.

Additionally, I ran a test with 10 battleships against 100 corvettes. The battleships were Missile only, the corvettes were shielded but no weapons. It took 160 days for the battleships to kill the corvettes. Mind you that's Large tier 5 missiles.

I then changed up the battleships so that they were armed with only flak. It took the 10 flak battleships only 86 days to kill the 100 corvettes.

Flak is overpowered.

Flak works well against corvettes, it completely counters missiles and it completely counters non-energy torpedoes.
