Energy is a MASSIVE issue if you maintain more than I have. Several major fleets + armies eat up a lot of resources that you simply cannot have unless you "cheat" with mods that provide a lot more energy sources than vanilla.
In my current game(at year 2440) I have 260K fleet and about 200 armies with no problem in minerals and energy. I have about 10 sectors half of which are maxed out in energy and minerals so I could get theirs as needed.
Of course I consumed 2 FEs and they gave me a big boost once I got the unrest down. They are very rich planets.
My armies are almost all Xenomorphs with Xeno Calvary attachments. I build them on planets with mil academies.
For starters, Hive Mind is very different from the other governments... you are basically going to be hampered in diplomacy all game long. So you need to rely more on a stronger than usual military. After all, you're usually going to eat or purge everything you could peacefully take over. Thus you need to expect more revolts, and have larger-than-usual numbers of armies. One or two fleets of 6-10 units is pretty weak no matter what your playstyle and what period of the game you're in.
Secondly, energy shouldn't be quite such a big issue if you are capable of taking these planets in the first place. Either you have decent energy, or decent mineral output to be in such a spot. So you could always trade minerals for energy if need be, then disband some armies once the unrest is done and you want to consolidate.
Third, if you are taking planets with massive populations, then that means massive numbers of tiles. For such a big reward, one might expect a good deal of unrest, even before you start eating or purging.
Fourth, what exactly is 'local standard defense' from the original post? If you mean the militia units that form from the local population you have controlled, then you're somewhat relying on a very dubious defense force to begin with. Those militia are good for stopping a single enemy army or two from ninja-ing a planet invasion, but to rely on them to be a major fighting force is to rely on incredibly weak units to maintain peace against a massive rebellion.
If you have build a Empire with perfect infrastructure that can take a higher toll, you can also occupy more planets at once. I think my max. number was 18 planets from two wars at once and one primitive civ new to my territory. And I still made profits out of my three sectors with just "normal" taxes instead of squeezing them for everything they have.
