I'm even surprise the varls stay outside with you.
That's one reason I decided to get in, to stay with them.
Is Ludin alive in your playthrough?
If Ludin is dead, then vals side with Rugga.
If you don't want to fight varls, you should side with their ally.
So if you want to side with Rugga, then you better let Ludin to cut dredges during the siege and let him die.
Decided to go with the King for exactly that reason. Ludin was still alive and I'm not going to side against the Varl after all we've been through. I hope we'll stumble upon a hidden group of Varl in the third game because the herd is getting a bit thin. I don't want them to go extinct
they might both suck but the king is the lesser of 2 evils here
I was playing the good Rook that run, so I don't know what happens if you let Rugga fall. Could be your way to get rid of him.
The whole thing wasn't that well done in my opinion. To me it wasn't even clear that siding with Rugga (Ludin lived in my playthrough) automatically meant going against the Varl, so I had to reload. Maybe I just missed something but I hadn't noticed that Hakon and the King had already settled there business by then and formed an alliance. I was under the impression that siding with Rugga meant siding against the King with my whole caravan, including the Varl.
That's a general problem I have with the game SOMETIMES. I enjoy the "randomness" or uncertainty of some of your decisions because you never truly know what might happen but there are some decision where you don't even really know the things you're deciding on. Sometimes you have 2 statements and 2 questions to choose from and asking a question somehow leads to making a certain decision instead of giving you information to make a better decision. This is just one example. There are plenty more things like that in the game.
I let him fall during my second playthrough. Most of his men fall but Rugga manages to get to safety and survive, unfortunately.
So when I saw the king he blamed the varl for his son death as he was under their protection. If I sided with the king I would have to fight the Varl.
So I sided with Rugga, despite the fact that he had just tried to kill me hours before. I was doing my imported Allete so the wholle condescending tone he uses with your main character really gets on your nerves. I hope there was some event where I could just bloody execute him. I'm sure we'll meet again on Banner Saga 3... (evil grin)
Since i'm usually not a total annihilation massacre guy, it means it a well written character.
As Rook, I wanted to kick his ar$e for giving me so much trouble in Boersgard. As Alette, I wanted to put an arrow through his eye because of his attitude.
I think he could be even better written, if: (a) it was made clear from the start that he's a strong ally, e.g. by a display of some sort, (b) he attempted to be amiable instead of always haughty and intimidating with that mute guard, Dagr, and (c) there was some proof that he actually holds sway in Arberrang and in the caravan. The way he "bailed out" of Boersgard and then shows up with that nerve doesn't help in any of the a-b-c mentioned above.
