If they do a good job on the mod, which I am sure they will, maybe in a few years we'll get another Dune game that will a quarter a good as the mod was with an 8th of the features.

Yes, one of the reasons I am getting this game is in hopes of a Dune 2 mod. It already has a dune 2 vibe from the settings n atmosphere.

my fav rts ever is Dune 2, just loved it as a youngster

I miss Dune 2 and especially Dune 2000, this game reminded me of them in a good way.

Plus I like Homeworld.

This seems to be the current stance of the developers in modding matters:
No new news, sorry. Unfortunately, design was not made with mods in mind, and changing things retroactively is extremely prohibitive.

Cheers,

So I guess for now and until there is a strong demand (if ever), we won't be getting modding tools. However, since this is a Unity game, DLL hacking and asset replacement is totally doable. It has been done before with other Unity games (and modding was done like this in the good old days anyway).
Does anybody know if there is a forum, thread or community anywhere out there dedicated to reverse engineering this game for the sake of modding? Every journey starts with a single step, so if anyone has done any work at all in this regard, come forward please. Let's get our greasy fingers in this engine.

BBI said they wouldn't legally object the community directly messing with the game code as long as it's not for cheating in multiplayer: https://www.pcinvasion.com/blackbird-wont-put-any-legal-blockages-on-mods-for-homeworld-deserts-of-kharak/amp

There is a route to modding, possibly.
https://github.com/ata4/disunity can be used for extracting and replacing assets
https://github.com/icsharpcode/ILSpy can be used to decompile the DLLs (Assembly-CSharp.dll is where the game code is supposed to live).
