So I allowed it in firewall, verified files, it downloaded bunch of epic stuff and... still does not work.

Not only does nobody ever ask for EOS to be added to games years down the line like this, it also has a tendency to break things, unfortunately.
I've seen it time and time again: along with these "updates", there's usually a bunch of stuff that breaks.
They really should, but unless you fall under the usual refund window limits (2 hours/2 weeks), good luck.
I still don't understand why Steam allows this, but considering how common it is, they clearly don't care.
