due to my worlds design i made a building made of crafted blocks (crafted blocks are important to prevent conversion by corruption). Each floor is holding a single cell of a size 11*11*5 blocks.
once the building was prepared i filled all sides with blocks of the chosen region (corrupted stones for corruption and hardened Lava for lava). the sides and the top are just cosmetical and dont matter. AFAIK only the ground layer is important. Once the Cells were done it took 1-2 ingame days to acclimate and they started working.
its important to prevent the use of artificial light that reaches inside the cell as any lighted block wont spawn chests nor mobs. natural light wont have that effect.
when building farmcells you also should fill up any space underneath those cells as chests and mobs might spawn inside that space.
those cells come and pay a visit (world 'blackrock' pw: brsi).
i learned most of this over time but some things were told and tested by Hexorcist.
yep natural light wont effect the spawn rate. but once the area gets too bright underground mobs tend to start burning ;)
i got a small lavacell, maybe 8*8*3 with one side having glasswindow but no lamps. i always have like 4 hotworms, 3 warmworms and 2-3 chests ( as long as the hotworms don start burning). i tested it with lamps. result: the cell was empty for half a day till i removed the lamps)
there is one exception though. a certain someones 'pet' wont spawn without lights as coal torches are requirement for causing spawning AFAIK.
i made a lava cell with 8*8 and there are always like 3 hotworms and 2-3 warmworms in it.
except for content and light inside a chunk it doenst matter where it is.
you can always join a public world and ask for further information.
@Kubiquity^3 maybe I'm calling them by the wrong name, I'm looking for the creature that provides the "wormtooth" resource. The ones that don't move, but spew lava/fire at you when you come too close. This whole mob farming concept is very exciting to me, really raises the game to new heights (or depths as the case may be!).
Nice community vibe:)
+1!
I'll be trying these tactics out later tonight:)
warmworms spawn on stalactite and lava blocks. but so do mirus and hotworms. and of those two it depends what kinda drops you need the most.
Mirus (stalactite) drop their eyes which is needed for mid-tier armor. Hotworms (lava blocks) on the other side drop gunpowder which you'll need to make bombs.
i hope i dun have to add that hotworms are harder to kill and more agressive ;)
The easiest way to build one of these is to just go down to the lava layer and clean the top of that layer off to a flat area. The bigger the Better. if it is important to have that spawner close to your base then once again the bigger the better. so long as you have a huge platform then you will have at least one spawnable chunk. The smallest platform that I can think of that would work no matter where you placed it would be a 16x16x1.
If you are wanting to make it the smallest yet still viable then an 8x8x1 that is completely within a single chunk is the way to go.
Do mobs not spawn on stone? I know I did a Peakstone spawner out in the ocean and it worked fine with a single layer of peakstone. I'm thinking maybe I need to switch to lava. Will I get all the recipes I need from the chests, because I was gonna farm the surface/fossil layer stuff first.
Mobs still spawn on Stone, and low light is needed for that to spawn correctly.
As far as mob farms go the easiest way to make them is a 16x16 pad.
If I can recal, stone spawnerd never worked though. Lava and corrupted were all that I used to do.
