Thanks, Adora! I'll give that a read, too.:D
Thanks, Alice! I'm slowly expanding the platform so now it's something like 16x32x2 sandstone wiht maybe a couple hundres canyon floor sprinkled on top - just experimenting.
I did add to the discussion in the tips and strategies linked.
By "capture area" it sounds like you're doing something other than gliding around looking for them. What's your strategy?
Thanks!
Near as I can tell the Trogs out spawn the Dustevil 3 or 4 to 1. Don't glide into the canyons, walk to them. The gliding is too fast and lowers the spawns. I just tried it and got 5 Trogs in 2 game days.
I have set up camp as close to as many biomes as I could to lower the number of spawners I need to build. You can see in the screenshot what I use as a capture teleporter. There are 4 spawners connected to the capture teleporter code. In 2 game days I had a bunch of mobs in there.

Edit:
Oops messed that up. Meant the dustevils out spawn the trogs 3 or 4 to 1.
Go to grassland, far from any other biome, dig a 9x9 hole 4 blocks deep, then fill it with 4 layers of canyon blocks like this, from top to bottom:
- Canyonstone
- Dark Canyonstone
- Ruddy Canyonstone
- Canyon Floor
(of course you would build it from bottom up)
Once those layers are in place dig three blocks deep holes, one block apart from each other, and one block apart from the edge, something like this from the top view:
and fill those X holes with 3 Cactus blocks each.
That setup pretty regularly got me 2 trogs and some chizzards. The weird thing about that setup is that it was extremely close to my fountains (so there were liquids of all sorts around it, including Bog Water and Lava - on the other side of the Lava fountain there was another, identical, canyon spawner built as above, but this last spawner only spawned DustEvils). The first canyon spawner was in particular very close to Bog Water, and it spawned Feral Pigsies and Mossy Leafies too, or something like that.
I seem to recall that when the bug of mobs and treasure chests spawning _under_ the spawner appeared (the bug that SaintSinner mentioned, that forces 1-block-tall spawners to be some blocks _above_ the water in order to avoid triggering the bug) I went back there to check my spawners and this one stopped spawning Trogs, but at the time I was in a hurry and I didn't really spend a lot of time there to verify it - some weeks earlier, when it was working and the spawning bug wasn't there yet, I used to spend a lot of time near that spawner cause there was my crafting area and my crops' farm.
Unfortunately I don't have the time right now to gather more info about all of this and for testing stuff out again, but I may eventually chip in again later or in the next days if I find the time and I have anything new to say about.
[edit] Just spent a whole in-game day near that spawner, got chizzards, mossy leafies, dried leafies, dustevils but no trog whatsoever. Also killed all the mobs as they spawned and got rid of any pet nearby. No dice, that spawner setup seems broken now.

I got it to spawn 9 trogs at once, they tend to spawn in the corners, though, the middle chunks don't seem to spawn at all. Each chunk is made of a checkerboard that alternates Sandstone, Canyon Floor, Ruddy Canyonstone and Dark Canyonstone, with 12 regular Canyonstone blocks in their middle to enclose 4 blocks of Mineral Water (full blocks, not flowing water).
In a couple of runs I've had the trap killing about two dozen Trogs, which got me about 42 Trog Horns without swinging my sword a single time.
When you watch them spawn in their natural envirenment they spawn quite a distance apart from each other.
This might be why they spawn in the corners, maximizing the distance available.

Each platform is exactly one chunk (in particular as placement, not just as size), and as before, it's made with 64 each of Sandstone, Canyon Floor, Ruddy Canyonstone and Dark Canyonstone, plust the small pool of 4 Mineral Water enclosed by 12 regular Canyonstone. Each platform is connected to another platform by a natural Stone passage ending with a 3 blocks high jump, which ensures a one-way only path for mobs towards the counting area (just a silly addition, there wasn't any need to count them). Once the Ice Door gets opened, the mobs try to get on the Red Wood Walls platform but they find the TP on their way, which sends them to the Corrupted Water trap.
By the way, I could have used TPs all over the place to get the mobs to the trap, but depending on the View Radius some of the farthest TPs disappear from view and mobs seem to happily pass through them as if I never placed them. This approach is slower but safer, cause sooner or later they will end up in the trap. If some Trog fails to find its way just hit them once and lead them to the trap.
There are 16 of such canyon blocks' platforms around the trap, each platform is exactly one chunk away from eachother (they cover up about 4 claims in total).
For the records, I managed to track down that famous post where the details of the Trog spawning algorithm had been posted, they seem to work just as fine today after two years:

While building this second version of the spawner I got Boss Hogs, Chizzards, Pigs, Rocksters and Dried Leafies spawning occasionally, they don't spawn anymore, I only get Trogs, from 4 to 10 or more at once depending on the RNG. Boss Hogs don't drown, if you get any in the trap you have to slay them yourself.
