My favorite method for farming iron ore is a different one not listed by
AshenJester: artificial biomes combined with kill-traps (an option that was added at the end of 2017).
You can either create artificial biomes from hardened lava (can be made infinitely by letting liquid lava flow and cool down) or igneous rock (not hot, so no risks to take environmental burning damage) to spawn iron treasure chests. These biomes can be combined with teleporters leading to kill-traps that will automatically drown hot feet additionally.
Or you can build artificial biomes from any type of corrupted blocks (or use dirt, grass or any kind of wood that you can then corrupt with corrupt bombs), which will make diamond treasure chests spawn. Kill-traps on and/or next to these biomes will provide you with lots of useful stuff any time a Thing or Keepa walks into the teleporter leading to the trap :D
You can either use your bed to skip the day or build walls and ceilings around your "arenas" (or "spawners"), since iron treasure chests and diamond treasure chests will spawn in dark areas during the day too. I recommend placing ladders into the kill-trap just in case you fall into it or walk into one of the teleporters leading there accidentially ;)
Two direct hits to a Warmworm with snowballs (made from processing snow in a processor) will kill it and leave it's loot.
Stand from a safe distance and hit the Warmworm. It will steam, indicating a direct hit. Just throw another and it will steam again for a few seconds and then die, leaving it's loot bag behind.
Hotfoots can be killed the same way, but usually take 3 snowballs and will attack you if you are too close. This may be random, but I have also noticed that they tend to leave less iron if killed this way. However, it is a good way to get rid of them if they are just bugging you to death.
Great post OP and Happy Creating!
The bigger you make the platform, the more spawns you are likely to get.
help is around for you if you want it...
hardened lava floor area also spawns the warmworms right? and hot foot s?
I so much more prefer and enjoy using excavators and find tons of iron and obsidian that way.
I love me some corruption farming though.
I get most of my Iron and Obsidian from chests in Corruption.
Normally I like making a 32x16 corruption spawner in a corner of a claim and cover it with a stone structure.
The spawner is just for the Things. I made a guide on this recently. Basically the larger size spawner gives a better chance of a chest spawning. Once the chest spawns you will get the Things as long as the chest remains there.
My personal best Things are 14 in one 24 hour game day. The cover allows them to spawn in daylight.
Two notes:
One, you can take everything out of the chest but one count of any item in the chest.
Two, logging out and into the world will spawn another Thing.
Also note I tested with others in the world and as long as they weren't in the area logging out and in worked.
Theoretically you could keep swapping players in the area and infinitely spawn Things from that chest.
Its a corruption massacre.
