For the popping sound - are you sure you don't have an extractor left somewhere that wasn't picked up? They make popping sounds whenever you are near to remind you to retrieve it.
I don't think i noticed a popping sound related to pets, but maybe someone can give further input on that as i often play with sound off.
In doing so... they kind of made the "farming" part obsolete. You can still tame pets, care for them, keep them for aesthetics or adventures--washing a Shrewdshrew is definitely one of the cuter things in the game. (If your GF hasn't seen that yet, she'll go bonkers.) But "mob farms" are where all the action is.
As you are new to the game, I won't break the parts of a mob farm down for you. You're here, and you're over halfway to finding the answer on your own. From a spoilers perspective I've said too much already, but your question deserved an honest reply.
