If you aren't looking in multiple caves, I'd try that. Usually, you can find at least a couple magnetite sections visible without any digging in new caves. Beyond that, you just have to start digging out tunnels until you hit some. If you find one block of magnetite, usually there is more roughly adjacent. I have found groups of 20 blocks all clustered together.
If I could stay connected long enough, i would take a screen shot of a mine with all it's blocks mined. It's a giant chasm with a grid like layout of paths and stairs.
