I don't know about all bioms but in the ocean on artificial island a block of cactus placed on the grass will spawn flower. It's possible to place one cactus block to the water and another one on the first and this "construction" will give flowers.

After you got the exact informations that you are seeking, please tell me what to change in those articles about growing Cactus-Flowers, so they won't be confusing any longer.

Not sure how recent this change is, but I've been growing cactus flowers on a single block of cactus since I started playing. I have new flowers each CV day.

I always just make a checkerboard of single high cactus (usually in a 7x7 space). Fairly quickly this will produce a hoard of flowers for me
NyanNya 11 ENE 2016 a las 9:05 a. m.
we made our cactus farm at the beach so mostly sand and water nearby

we placed three block height cactus and no spacing in at least 7x7x3 with no wall so far we are not running out of cactus flower any soon:steamhappy:
SakeBreath 11 ENE 2016 a las 9:06 a. m.
you can grow them anywhere

Now that's interesting. I've not been able to grow cactus flowers on just 1 block "high" cacti yet, seems I have to give it one more try :)

Hm, as often as I have tried, cactus flowers would not start to grow unless a certain number of cactus-blocks were be placed close to each other. Just placing one block of cactus anywhere never worked for me, also not recently.

I've found making high (!) walls of cacti to be a waste of cactus-blocks though, as non-dependant on the number of cactus-blocks placed there will never be more than a certain number of cactus flowers growing within an area. Very different to those 4 kinds of tree-flowers that you can grow; they grow waaay more slowly, but have not stopped yet.

Cactus grow flowers everywhere except for underground, so they do need a light source. So up in trees, in the cold, etc. As long as they have light they will grow a flower. I usually do 1 space apart and about two high in a 5x5 grid. You can place them up against stuff. My last cactus farm, I hadn't planned the garden right and had to put them right against the stone wall. They still produced flowers.

thank ya'll, now i'll start my own cacti-flower farm
Lil Puppy 11 ENE 2016 a las 10:03 p. m.
My cacti will only grow flowers on random cactus blocks, not all of them, if I harvest ones that have grown, they will grow on another set of random cactus blocks. I've yet to get all of my cacti to grow flowers regardless of biome and temperature or water location.
It really sucks that they're not reliable. Before R26 a single cactus block would grow 3 high with a flower on top, now they just don't grow at all and a flower spawns on top of random ones.

Why are you saying that? When did you test it? My cactus flowers grow very well in the underground. Even on the corruption layer. EDIT: yep, in complete darkness too (at least when the player-character is close by).

That's what I meant by "only a certain number of cactus flowers in a specific area". For example if you place 12 cactus-blocks (4 pillars each made of 3 blocks) into one chunk (or so), only 2 flowers will spawn.

And the same thing happens if you place 9 cactus-blocks (3 pillars each made of 3 blocks) into the same area: 2 flowers will spawn. Where exactly the flowers will spawn is random, but there will always be exactly 2. It will take time though to find out how many pillars are neccessary to make 3 flowers spawn, and what exactly will be the maximum number of flowers in one chunk or area...

If you don't place enough cactus-blocks into an area/chunk (or too far from each other), no flowers will grow. EDIT: okay, cactus flowers also do grow on pillars of 2 blocks in height and even on platforms only 1 block in height, but it seems to take a lot longer. I had to wait 2 ingame-days until 1 flower finally grew on the 3x4 platform with only 1 block height...

I have 9 3-tall pillars of cactus each 2 blocks away from each other, and I can confirm I haven't seen more than 2 flowers in them at a time. Strange. It's like the game makes some check to see how many are in a certain area and limits any more from spawning. And it's a very strict limit.
Lil Puppy 12 ENE 2016 a las 11:52 p. m.
I've never needed to make mine higher than a single block but I guess I'll have to because after 3 real world days, none of them have grown anything.

Some close to water, some on their biome blocks, some in the distance near a water fountain, not a single one has grown a flower and just last week I would get 2 flowers on 4 single block cacti.

Bug needs addressing.

What bug?

It is very likely that growing cactus flowers on small artificial cacti takes a lot longer than on larger cactus-pillars. And it also seems like they will only grow well as long as at least one player-character is close btw.

For now, neither specific blocks, light nor water is needed to make cactus flowers grow. Actually I wouldn't like that to be changed.
Lil Puppy 13 ENE 2016 a las 11:16 p. m.
Previously I could stand there after placing a cactus block and within a minute it would grow 3 blocks high all by itself and spawn a flower on top for 4 total blocks high. Now, if I took the flower, it would take a while longer to spawn a new flower. The cacti in this screenshot acted like that before R26. I could place a single block and within a small window of time they grew this high and spawned flowers on two of them while I watched.
http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=598458353

However, since R26 they just don't do anything but sit there and maybe once in a great while they would spawn a flower. There is a bug somewhere in the cactus and it is annoying.
