The area needed for a Mob to spawn?
I was wondering if you where covering up an area and you left 1 block missing and there was a 1 block missing under the ground, if mobs would spawn or not. Or does the area need to be bigger (like a 2x2 missing blocks under the ground in the dark)? Or do mobs don't spawn in such small areas? I know for a fact if it is dark in a cave they spawn. Let's say one wants to make a mob grinder. How big would the dark area need to be? Would you need to be next to that area in order for mobs to spawn while the chuck is loaded? Can you even make a mob grinder? Let me know what you know and share your thoughts on this.

A mob can spawn in a 1x1 aria,

For mob grinders i have a concept in mind but the only thing that is i am not clear on the spawning room, you can stand next to a perfect spâwning room and never see a mob spawn in it.

For the grinder it self? My idea was to use fans to push mobs in a teleporter so you can have multiple rooms and then use fans again to push them true lava/corruption/ice so they are easy to kill.

But like i stated, i never was able to see it work because of the unpredictable spawning in this game.

you need atleast a 3 by 3 block area (if not more) for it to be considered a "cave" and for night monsters to spawn... but unless your REALLY lazy you wouldn't need this...

this wouldn't work anyways xent ... if YOU dont' physically kill the mob you don't get a loot bag, i tried experimenting with mob grinders back in R14 or so and that was my result, lots of dead mobs fast but no loot :(

yes they can spawn on a single block, however the game mechanics make it so that any 10x10 area of "biome specific" blocks (e.g., corrupted stone, savannah grass etc.) will be regarded as a viable biome, thus why we are able to create mob spawners. unfortunately we cannot "automate" this activity in such a was as to collect the loot from our ingenuity and hard work :)

unless of course you stand there and hope to get the "fatal strike" while the mob is running around on fire from the lava you just dumped on it lol.

Mobs can spawn in a 1x1 space. I have successfully made a Mob Spawner that spawned mobs and teleported them elsewhere using fans and teleporters. However, like craftagent51 said the spawning rules require that a majority of blocks be from the Mobs homeland, and the player must do the killing.

For my "grinder" I had them all teleport into a pit that I could throw bombs, snowcubes, and rimecones into.

I am also not sure if Warmworms are affected by fans...

I've been meaning to try this, primarily to get my pet warmworms to a more convenient location than where they spawned.

lol i've tried many different methods of Warmworm travel ... to no avail they are as static as the block they spawn on :) .... the only way is to make a spawner and tame a few warmwors that spawn, remove all the block but the ones the Warmworms are on, then just build them a tidy hot home :)

RemyD? do you remember the size the fan can push a mob at, was planning that same mob grinder with multiple rooms, also, am i correct in to assume that mobs spawn 30 blocks away from you and with a max of 70?

The fan method of moving mobs is a fun exercise. But in my experience too costly to deploy effectively over multiple spawners. For a super small spawn area, it's easy to cover the area with fans. But then there's the question of how many mobs you'll get to spawn in that small area with any meaningful frequency. In a larger spawn area, where the spawn rate is more predictable, you need so many fans. A fan will push a mob 3 blocks away. So you need a fan every 4th block. On a 16x16, you'd need 64 fans. Of course you could use a few rows of fans, and assume eventually the mob will wander into the row of fans. The other mechanic to remember is that mobs can get stuck on the fans if you're detected and they go into fight mode. So you need to stay away from this spawner. Once you're detected, you'll need to kill the mob since the fan will not longer have any effect.

I remember it being a lot of fun creating these fan systems. But in the end, it was just easier and more effective to make a big spawner and then jump in and kill the mobs.

My farm was built within one chunk and had drops of 3 blocks down each level. The flat area that the fans push is about 3 - 4 blocks. I had 3 layers like this

thank RemyD, i might call for you when i start building it to make sure its on the chunk
