How do you guys organize your chests?
I am relocating all of my items from my old town to the new city I am working on and as many of you probably know, this can be quite the chore. As I am moving things over I am thinking of different ways to organize my chests and wanted to ask you all your favorite ways to organize items? Do you use a chest per every single item, both gathered and created? Do you keep them organized by the layer the item is found in? Give me some feedback, y'all!

I usually have two chests each for things like plants, animal drops, flowers, wood, fossil-layer stone and other stone, and one chest each for each kind of ore, low-level crafting stuff like twine and wood roods, slabs, rods, high-level crafting stuff like arcstones and gunpowder, snow/ice/glass/sand, liquids and pigments, equipment, light sources, bombs, potions/extractors/excavators, and the rest of the house is filled with chests labelled "blocks" that contain leftover and found crafted blocks and things like grass, dirt, coral.

I tend to try to keep the more used items in a chest all their own, and of course crafted blocks get their own chests depending on quantity what goes in varies thoug h. natural blocks I tend to seperate by layer

I have for every kind of block a chest, but organize it in different rooms.

Like all Stone sorts (Stone, Bedrock, Canyon stone, corrupted stone, ...) or all green stuff in one room (except leaves) or all stuff needed to craft (ores, glob of goo, melded wax, processors, ...)
And then in the rooms organize it according what could be belong together, like all adobe blocks on one the same wall of the room,

the storage need so maybe a little bit more place but for me it is clear where you can find what.

Built a long house blue print and use it as a warehouse and teleportation hub.

The blocks are categorized and sorted into sections.

and at the end we put our teleportation hub so we can go too and from build projects and the warehouse easily.

I have to admit that I've only been playing for a fortnight but I've already hit that "Where on earth do I stick everything?" moment....

And let's not forget the Liquids room;

If anyone has suggestions of a good easily remembered system for storing everything I'm certainly looking for one.

One chest per block, each block according to layer association.
For the trees/flowers they're according to height (wood, leaves, flowers)
For the rock strata they're according to layer (grass, dirt, mud, rock, etc)
For the rest of the blocks they're according to layer + crafting of associated materials.

Animal parts get 6 chests. Common, Rare, Bulk, Goo, etc.
Plants get Crafted Food, Raw Food, Seeds and Tools.
Liquids get 3 chests: Solid, Viscous, Liquid

Pets get 6 chests, tools & scents, the rest are for hats...

Armor gets 8 chests (10 if we get hats) 2 for each part.
Weapons & Cells & Excavators get a few chests
Explosives get 8 chests

I have a few hundred chests in my warehouse and all basics are close to full, crafted range from dozens of stacks (common drops) to just a sample of the item.

I've created a hidden temple themed storage vault for my chests. I'm thinking of eventually turning my base into an adventure...

I really enjoy mining and building large projects, so I need quite a bit of storage. :steamhappy:

My storage has gone through many incarnations.

I just redid the entire room in fact and came up with a very simple system.

http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=943898593

There are 8 sections, each is read like a chart. Instead of s single plaque or sign for each chest there are now 2 arc signs per section. Easily copied and changed as needed.

Huge thank you to Remy and Ko0L4id for help with the text placement on the upper sign.

How to spot that a game needs to do something about storage: People start making warehouses and find ways to incorporate them into buildings in stylish and tasteful ways just as much out of wanting it to look nice as actually having some organisation to things so finding that, for example, Red Adobe Roof piece is straight forward and simple and you don't end up with multiple storage locations for them.

Also, Arc signs?.... hmmm I don't recall seeing those in my crafting options....

Thank you, I just went in game and found them.... stupid thing is I've seen them used before but didn't think about what that meant or what it was I was looking at. Needless to say I'm thinking about switching to them instead of Wood Plaques

Hmm thought: Do Block Phasers work on storage chests? And can they be used to set up better storage arrangement.... if nothing else they can be used to hide and unhide the chests and signs....

Phasers do not work on chests; however, you may phase blocks in front of the chests to hide them. Arc signs can also be turned on or off as needed.
