What's your most effective way of farming saplings?
most efficient? fastest? tips, tricks,etc...

I have been placing saplings in large groups to minimize leaves, then pulling the leaves by hand to get more saplings...

Use a excavator and place it on top of the tree i tryed it and got some Saplings

While they CAN load in a bunch if you plant them all together, every once in a while I'll get a few duds so I stopped. I don't harvest the leaves unless I'm out of saplings, I just leave them there. I do harvest the leaves in a straight line going up from the trunk so the original block of dirt has nothing over it & can get sunlight. Then I place new sapling in the same spot. This way I don't have to clear leaves every time I plant a new sapling.

sounds tactical... so a kind of dedicated sapling area where you just remove the trunks and leaves directly above, then replace the sapling... I like it, I think my church is getting an orchard soon heh
You can also glitch it by stack jumping, it has the same chances as grabbing wood and leaves from trees. jump stack as high as you can and pull it and watch the magic happens
@blazecaster02, are you sure that works? last time I check it doesn't. it doesn't even work on long grass to get wheat seeds

@saint,you mean for farming saplings from leaves? I always use flowers for pillaring up to things for that reason, it works for saplings too? I was going to check that out...

Im gonna slide you over to tips and strategy so people can find this in the future and know :)

If you build it near your base where it loads in often, you get lots of honey & flowers from it. The more time you spend near leaves, the more time they have to spawn that stuff.

My most effective method is to let someone else do it and share the woody goodness with me...
It works with leaves and woods too, but just like in a whole tree, the chances are low but will still get saplings.

Make a BP of a block or platform of leaves. Keep completing and removing the bp.

FWIW, saplings are useful & all, but they are not a wood supply. Each sapling is around 7 blocks of wood. Razing one good-sized tree will get you more wood than 50 saplings. The wood from saplings is passive (which is great for casual players) & better than nothing, but very negligible. Wildwood saplings don't even exist, which is the prettiest wood IMO. A single chest can get you more cragwood than 6 saplings.

Plant saplings when you get them. Grab every chest of every kind that ever spawns anywhere EVER, even if you have to drop what you're doing to loot some wood. But when you really need wood, and a lot of wood, go kill a tree.

Or break out your wallet, customize a blueprint kit, and buy a few stacks of the wood(s) of your choice. As a natural block it's incredibly cheap. Not as cheap as lettuce seeds but still cheap. A few stacks are probably cheaper than a nasty burrito at a gas station.

So ask yourself, do I want a nasty gas station burrito that will be gone in 5 minutes & might make me sick? Or do I want 3 stacks of wildwood that can occupy my creativity for hours & possibly live on forever in a blueprint that might get tons of upvotes?

duly noted, all of that...
I exist in one long time world and dont want to destroy trees. I've hollowed out great wildwood trees, cragwood, and i got my eye on a giant elderwood tree... but it's not sustainable in a long-time-in-only-one-world environment.
probably should've mentioned that bit first :P
For the (absurdly lol) amount of slabs and rods needed for many blueprints in my world I need tons of wood, and coins are running low... it becomes worth farming wood, granted as you've said, only finally and recently (I've spent plenty)... I'm seeking options for me and others who don't have any coins, or many coins (for now heh)...
theres a blueprint for 100 flowers that i can customize to saplings and its 10 coins, practically nothing.

BTW, i agree wildwood is the prettiest and hollowing out a giant wildwood is satisfying (af), and i got 6500 wood from one giant wildwood tree day before yesterday... too much fun lol. I'd much rather display that wood, and farm crag for slabs...

I guess I'm just exploring the options and trying to save my environment, my coins, and maybe only out of boredom, exploring the mechanic of farming saplings practically.

OH! and night raiding the world flying around for surface chests for wood rocks! it is practical and efficient, highly recommend this. Keepas drop wood too, not quick or efficient but i think it's silver keepas drop cragwood iirc...

created TREE FARM blueprint tonight for any interested...

I don't grow saplings for the wood but for the leaves and/or because I like the trees. I gather logs for wood or hollow out the big trees. Also those low bushes are good too. I use the ashen wood and cragwood taken from the low bushes to replace any vines or moss I take from the trees. The wildwood pull quickly compared to ashen wood and cragwood and there are large amounts of those bushes in the jungle.
