I've not seen or heard of too many others who only / mainly stay on surface. Most people I know spend quite a bit of time in the depths especially when they find out how rewarding it is to hunt Things. But I can see if you only stay top side that the need for the strongest is a mute topic.
*edit also if I spend more then 30 minutes in the corrupted layer I end up with a handful of diamond swords easy peasy.
Anyway, I learned long ago (about 2011, when Skyrim came out), that having the best gear isn't always fun. I like the challenge, or maybe just the laid back causal action (when I COULD crush my opponent if I wanted). So I can smite down an enemy in one hit? Unless we are talking cool finishers, that just isn't fun. Add in Skyrim's mods or even outright cheats if you want, and all challenge is gone. You can mod up a bow that deals so much damage, it one-hits DRAGONS, and they start burning up before they hit the ground. That's cool to look at, and worth a few lols, but, where's the fun in the long run? People already complained that the game was dull once you got max level gear, even without mods.
So I learned, fun is more important than efficiency. So what if I can walk like a god among men? Isn't the fun in the fighting, the challenge, the epic showdown? So I got choosy about which power mods I added to the game, chose to use mid-teir armor because it looked awesome, and I STILL had no trouble winning the game. The same applies here in Creativerse. I can kill Things and collect tons of diamond gear. I'm sure Lumite armor is worth it, but I have a nice challenge taking them out with diamond, and Lumite really IS a finite resource. I'll use my Lumite sword down there when enemies are really tough, but it's too valuable to waste on surface enemies, when iron and diamond are perfectly suitable.
So that's why the other weapons are still useful. I would suggest dragging one out and using it for a while, just to experience it. If you really feel you NEED to crush a pigsy in one hit, fine, go back to your Lumite sword. It's your style, and you play how you want. For me? I'm gonna stick to my flashy and awesome Flux Incapacitator!
BTW, that golden sword is friggin HUGE. Was it supposed to be a two handed broadsword?
I don't frequently swap gloves, the diamond glove is just a backup until I can get back to base & grab another lumite one. I like the harvest speed too much to intentionally downgrade. But if I know I'll set my mouse to auto harvest liquids and be AFK for a few, I definitely use diamond.
While new swords would be cool, there's already a lot in game to distinguish the "haves" from the "have nots". The "haves" have PRO by their name, more claims, can fly, usually are loaded with premium blocks which they use with no further care than they would any other block. If you're one of the "have nots", this constant reminder can be pretty degrading. Allowing the "have nots" to be 100% equal to us in combat, right down to the look of the weapons & armor they use, I think it's good. This game isn't just free to play, but a free player can have all the best stuff & do just as well as anyone too. They can feel pretty good about themselves.
Also, the lumite stuff is all purple. That makes it cooler than anything premium.
I never equip friends with lumite. Always diamond. Diamond is very good, but not quite the best. When they get the best, it's an accomplishment. If I simply hand it to them, I'm taking away that chance for them to accomplish something really cool on their own. I'll give them 2 of anything they might need, as long as it's diamond. I also give them the choice to use it or not. If they want to rough it & accomplish everything on their own, go for it! The diamond stuff can be an emergency backup, or they can just throw it away. All the same to me.
Now, I DID trade a lumite upgrade for some green goo, but I was so tired of hunting goo. Also, he'd been in the game a month & still didn't have lumite. He cared nothing for the accomplishment, he just wanted the best gear. And I wanted goo, so it was a win/win.
(no one tell him that diamond swords can kill a pigsy in one hit, ok?)
Now if lumite gear came with some other benefits, such as being able to slot a potion in it for a buff (such as fire/cold/corruption resistance), then it might actually be worth using.
One of the problems with online games is power creep -- the constant upward push to make gear more powerful (to make it more attractive to players), which then in turn necessitates making mobs more powerful to keep them challenging -- which is then followed by an increase in gear power....etc. The problem gets worse as a game ages. So higher tier gear doesnt necessarily have to be more powerful in terms of attack vs defense, but it does need to have some benefits (other than wowie purple!!) to make players choose it over less powerful but easier to get gear.
New weapons dont necessarily need to have bigger bang, but they do need something besides a new skin and a neat particle effect. Perhaps enhanced durability. Maybe the occasional insta-kill crit (not really a fan of that personally). Perhaps a vampiric quality, where the user is healed for a percentage of the damage dealt (a personal favorite of mine) or it just has a healing aura that heals over time. There are alot of ways to make new gear (especially ones costing real money) more appealing that dont involve MOAR DPS!!!
I like the idea of adding more to a weapon to make it beneficial rather than giving it more dps.
usually just go down once for getting enough lumite and dust for 1 cell adn 1 leg. golden sword. both last for months even on a nonfriendly world :D
While I can't speak for Lumite armor (Things crap out Diamond armor and I stack regen foods, so, not really needed), but the Lumite grade swords are a LOT stronger than Diamond. Diamond and Iron are the two that are very close together. I've seen stats gathered on testing sword strength; Diamond only needs just a couple more hits to kill than Iron. So when Iron grade weapons shine like gold or glow electric blue? Totally worth it!
Hey, I'm just curious, why spend so much time in the Corruption? For me it's a place I only go for treasures, but all the rest of the game, the building, the exploring higher level caves, etc, all are much less threatening than down there. I too would go full Lumite if I played down there most of the time.
well mainly to get that layers treasure chests as they give tons of resources. I'm always in need of extra arctyk chests and such too. Though now I'm slowly seeing why more and more people who have tons of hours in this game barely go down there anymore because I'm starting to have stock piles of so much of everything all I really need to do is build.
corruption runs grant you arcstones, corruption dust, diamond gear, iron ore, obsidian ore, advanced extractors, random gear and a challenge which exceeds the other biomes/layers.
This, once again meatball says it best. and I learned this from Meatball so its apropos he's the one breaking down the details.
Hey, I got an idea! Clear out some corruption and build a house down there! Can farms grow down there if the corrupted blocks are kept away? I'm not being sarcastic; this would make for cool screenshots and epic stories!
well with the stock pile of resources I have. It was more cost effective to collect a load of chests from the corrupted layer than craft them myself, especially when I'm already down there collecting arcstones, iron, obsedian, extractors, and such.
When I need Iron and or obsedian I head down to the corruption layer and farm for a couple hours and typically I need to have at least half my inventory empty before doing so.
I have a couple base camps down in the corruption layer but I've never tried to make a farm down there.
