Is there a way to place the slab just 1 half bit higher? it's either like this http://i.imgur.com/yGIWoSb.png

or this

Between the heights in your pictures is no middle ground. Each slab has still the value of a full block, so it's either on top of the block or at the bottom, but cannot be in the middle.

Edit: An option might be to rotate the slab from the ground upwards. It will not be as high as the other one, but not in the middle, either.

All blocks are rotatable but they all also take up one block space. So yes you can have a half slab at the top of the block space or at the bottom but not two slabs in the same block space.

Highlight the block and hit and hold R to rotate the block to the direction you want to place it.

that should be changed tbh. slabs should act as half blocks not whole blocks.

It has always been this way we don't have half blocks in game currently just the slabs that visually take up a half space.

not happening. this would result in twice the data for worlds if not even more.

I don't know enough to say you're wrong, but would it really be twice as much? It's not like half blocks are common naturally.

The solution to your problem is exactly what rotating does. Just hold 'R', click and grag the block around until it is in the position you want it to.
No need for slabs to be half blocks to achieve that.

BUT ! (there is a but :p), you can not .... rotate a grass slab and still have the grass on the top.

That confused me :(

Try holding down shift and click to place it on top of the glass slab.

not Glass, Grass :p

Sorry I misunderstood you. (Te has now put on her glasses) :)

@Naollie You are absolutely correct. Some blocks have a different texture on the top than the bottom. A grass slab is one such, If you rotate it as was suggested, you get dirt. Wood and stone slabs have the same texture so they would work.

Looking at your screenshot, it seems the solution is exactly as some have suggested : rotating the slab.
  • Start like the first screenshot

  • Press and maintain R while your cursor is over the slab

  • Left click and hold while you move the mouse to rotate, make it do a 180 along along the vertical axis (move the mouse up/down)

  • Release both R and Left Click when your done
Bonus tip : Notice that your cursor now have a lock icon on it? Any other slabs you'll place while it's like that will be placed the same way. You can also press and release R while targeting a block to copy it's rotation to the same effect (very usefull if you are making designs with rotated blocks that don't have the same texture on each sides).

Me too at first, but now I can use it to force dirt to stay visible (for decorating). It can't change to grass since that's on the underside...

as said before rotating the slap by 180° will let you place it in the upper half. what you asked for afterwards was changing the default shape to a slab size which would in return make all full blocks into double slabs. this would mean that the grid which is used for placing the blocks would have twice the amount of coordinates in height.
