Gear cannot be repaired. You will have to craft new one or go hunting chests and hope to find some gear in those.

As Julia_maluca stated you cant repair gear in this.
If you are able to hunt the "Thing" in the corrupted level you can have unlimited Diamond gear available.
My way around this was to find materials needed for the gear I was using most and collect enough of it to keep me in supply.
Unlike Minecraft which you need to build an inventory full of pick axes, Hoes, or any other equipment needed to do large scale mining, lumber collecting or farming you only need one item in this game, the power cell (glove) Amor and weapons can't be repaired but once you find the locations and critters needed to collect the needed materials I suggest taking teleporters with you so you can put them in the areas you'll need to collect materials making it easier to go to and from when you need to make new equipment.

Hope this helps.

I keep an extra mining cell, another full set of armour, an extra sword or two, a processor, a forge, 2/4 teleporters, a healing beacon, potions, torches and 99 red mushrooms on me or in a chest beside the door to pick up on my way out.
Never leave home without 'em.

Gear durability is only an issue (if that) early in the game, as later on :
  • Lumite mining cell is infinite on everything beside the lava layer (iron/diamond), corruption layer (diamond), certain liquids : tar (iron/diamond) bog water (diamond), mineral water (diamond), lava (lumite) and corrupted water (lumite). I've put the alternate gloves you can use to avoid wasting your lumite glove. These can be found for free either in treasure chests (iron) or from Things (diamond).

  • As you get stronger weapon, you'll kill creatures in less strikes meaning less loss of durability. Since creatures die faster, they'll hit you less meaning less loss of durability for your armors as well. I usualy stick to diamond gear that can be found for free from Things (I end up with chests of unused extras, usualy from tamed pets).

  • You'll have more then enough materials to craft the two tools that do not fit the categories above : Hoe, Washer.
