Demo Update 5

We've been working hard at the game over the past few months, hoping to improve the overall experience of the demo while simultaneously working on the full game release.

There's a few more things we want to add in to the demo, such as improving the tutorial flow. We've heard from some that the amount of information is too high at the start - we're thinking of ways to improve on that.

Here's the change log:

Replaced the checkpoint system with our final save/load system. The system has a 9 rolling auto-saves everytime the player comes close to a Shrine (or at a few other specific locations, such as right before a boss fight).

Improved the M+KB experience significantly. We decided to focus on one input at a time, and now we've had time to improve the M+KB experience after taking into account all the feedback from our demo players. Added in a direction indicator
under Titus's feet as well to help with the M+KB experience

Key re-bindings are now implemented in the game, you can do so in the settings.

Replaced and improved both the boss and puzzle experiences. Ubir has 2 phases now, and multiple new moves to smash the player with. Similarly, the light mirror puzzle has been re-done for a more challenging experience.

The game as a whole has been sped up by a few percentage points.

Sprinting is now an option, with the player able to sprint as long as they can afford the stamina costs by pressing in the left thumbstick or pressing.

Enemies now sometimes randomly drop mana orbs, which can significantly increase mana generation and thus give the player more spellcasting opportunities

Added in a few new Blessings for the player to choose from at the Shrines but also added in two default Blessings for the player to have fun with

Added in a couple new Shrines at the Swamp level to make it easier to pick up where you left off or if you died

Added in salvage and repair options for players during the first Action-Tower Defense section so they can clear a path if they barricaded themselves in.

Added in object pooling so there should be fewer stutters in-game and the ones that do happen should be quicker. This is something we plan to continue to improve on.

Mostly fixed a bug where Titus' model would "dance" with the sword but not finish an attack animation cleanly and start the next one.

Lots of Crash Fixes!

And a lot, lot more.

It took us a while to get this update out - some of the changes were much trickier to get done than anticipated. We'll try and send out updates at a quicker rate moving forward, but they're also likely to be smaller updates.

xBow REALLY needs to be aimed with mouse direction

Once you hold alt to ready and charge your xbow, it's nigh impossible to be say walking left and shooting right, as you'd be trying to hold A to move left, and you'd have to hold S to aim and shoot right. I could see it potentially being a bit wonky, but I think being able to control the aim of your xbow with the mouse instead was WASD while aiming would be an immense improvement....

Hello!

The Frontier Paladin team wishes you a happy new year and an excellent 2025!

We're excited to be entering the launch year for the game. While we work on the game as a whole, we try to prioritize tasks that also impact the demo wherever possible.

We've updated the game a couple of times with quite a few changes in the past couple months with no event notifications, but I'm going to try and do a better job of communication moving forward. Some of the previous unannounced changes include bringing the demo size from 11GB to under 5GB as well as several bug fixes.

Things we're working on that should make their way onto the next demo (ETA within the next 2 weeks):
- Removed the checkpoint system and added in the final save/load system, where the game autosaves whenever you visit a shrine. This has the main benefit of saving your equipment and skill load outs.
- Finalizing the new boss encounter
- Improved enemy AI
- Fixing multiple controller input issues
- Improved M+KB experience
- A slightly sped up combat experience
- Some new equipment choices, and a vendor to buy and sell equipment at base
- A new and improved puzzle
- Improve performance

Along with a myriad of smaller changes here and there that will improve your playing experience.

Demo Major Update

It’s been about a month since our last update to the demo, and we’ve been working hard to add features and polish while removing bugs. Here’s some of the headline changes to the demo build:

- Changing how the combat system works. Now instead of all Blessings being powered by mana (with the player drinking mana potions to refuel), mana now is generated by the amount of melee damage you inflict. The mana potions are replaced by Tokens of Faith, which now exclusively are consumed every time you use a Heal spell.

- The player now starts with the Ward Blessing instead of Heal, which now has its own dedicated button and resource cost.

- Added in crit windows for charged attacks. Like how the Wristbow works, getting your timing right results in a critical attack, which depending on the weapon used, grants benefits such as extra damage, debuffs to enemies, larger AoEs, etc. They add to the skill ceiling and we've been enjoying them these past few days.

- Revamped the Equipment and Blessing UIs to give more information and be clearer and more concise with information you might want.

- You will be able to see the path taken by incoming enemy waves before they enter. Grid modifiers have a new widget that shows the benefits (or penalties) of building on that grid more clearly.

- Rebalanced the Tower Defense sections, increasing health for most defensive structures. Ice turrets also slow enemies hit by them. Turrets should rotate and acquire targets quicker.

- Removed negative grid modifiers and added in some positive ones at choke points in the 2nd and 3rd defense section.

- Created a “penning system” which can spring up and catch you within. You’ll need to kill all the enemies inside before you’re allowed to leave. There's a few of these ambushes placed in the swamp.

- Added in an extra visual effect on the stamina bar when unable to afford the stamina cost of an action, making it abundantly clear to players they cannot do that action.

- Fixed a major bug where players were unable to purchase spells from Shrines sometimes

- Fixed a major bug where the swamp map was not visible for players even though they had talked to the Scout Engels

- Fixed an issue for some people where Steam VR would attempt to start on launch

The above are some of the really big changes but there are dozens of smaller ones as well. We’re continuing to work on the game and demo. The feedback we’ve received from players has been invaluable when it comes to making the game a better and more polished experience, for which we’re very grateful.

We’ll be back in a few weeks with another big update to the demo. Some of the things currently being worked on include the vending system (allowing you to buy and sell equipment), a much better boss fight, and several new abilities to play around with.

Tutorial Windows with Timer.

Have option to pause the timer. Better to have a click to remove tutorial rather than a count down timer. It went by really fast before I could read all the tutorial information.

Needs graphic options

What looks like could be a cool game gets ruined for me because of the constant major frame rate drops. The developer really needs to pull this demo off Steam until graphic options are added. Many players like me will just ignore the game believing that it will not run properly on their system. The demo also starts Steam-VR, which is an easy fix the developer needs to make....

The devs have a lot of work ahead of them.

Don't make finding a map a feature, it's an objectively bad feature, especially with how wide and samey the swamp was. Fix the Shrines. I could not buy blessings. No use getting the helmet from discount Archimedes' ruined house when I can't get Seraphic Speed as an upgrade. Enemies need a lot of work, especially in regards to how they telegraph their attacks. Half of the orcs don't even flash red when they're about to swing at you. And for God's sake, get someone to rework the armour set you see in the e...
