Comparison between files from steam or my cd version and your cd version would be the best thing. Bringing back some things may be as easy as copying and overwriting one/few files.
I checked Amazon, looks like Strategy First released I of Dragon in America? So, 4th version confirmed xD along with steam version, (russian) akella version, and (europe) zuxxez version (imho best soundtrack).
Unfortunately I do not have my CD anymore, at least I don't think so, I have moved a lot due to family issues and I don't have all of my belongings... I may or may not have the game in the boxes which is why I bought it on here... But is there a way to get the files from the CD version I had, whichever one that is, and put them into the files from the steam version as a patch or 'update' that people can optionally download if they want that version? I'd prefer it because of nostalgia, and for the minimap, I'd prefer it the old way with the gold borders as well. Where it is now is an eyesore but I don't want to turn it off. Any ideas?
I found my original disk copy along with the original box it was in, (the memories), so is there any way I, or someone else if I can send the files, make a Steam Update for this version to add the features of the disk version like a patch or update people could optionally install?
That would ultimately come down to knowing which files you'd need to overwrit, then packaging them as an Archive file (7-zip, winrar, etc.) to be passed to others. It's doubtful that they'd make an 'official' patch like that.
It's also possible that, because it is meant for an older version of Windows, some things simply don't work the same anymore. I once tried to play the CD version I borrowed (And might pester my friend to let me re-borrow...) with a windows 7 laptop..... the textures were ♥♥♥♥♥♥ and it ran pretty bad. It could've been just the laptop, but there's a very real chance that the game simply has issues with newer OS, and that's why there's missing features.
It was likely just the laptop because it looks fine with mine, and mine is a potato (lol). Idk I'll likely just play the disk now. I'll have to start all over but eh, it's all good.
Add me, so I will send PM to you

Official patch would be Topware thing (best option could be alternative patch under game properties in steam, beta tab), but unofficial one would be still viable for peoples with steam version, but without cd (lost, damaged, etc). There are guides in guides section - that should be enough to fix bugs on modern PC (steam or disc version). However, here, we have case with missing features from one version, not just bugs.
Not entirely true. The case may be that the features were meant to run on a specific setup within the program, which Win 7 doesn't have. Either through redundancy, obsoleteness, or some other factor it's entirely possible that the function of displaying the values/ names simply doesn't work. If an original, CD copy of the game runs fine on Win 7 though, then there'd be a reason to call it missing. And ifthat's the case... one hs to wonder what version of the actual game is being 'sold' on steam, if not a final and functioning Disc copy
I played my disc version and went through the beginning area and the names of the Stardrud's, their lairs, and the Bugs and their lairs along with their health. Quibeck's voice is the original old man voice I remember and the minimap is in the top left corner of the screen with its gold border, and everything works fine. So someone took something out when they uploaded it on Steam.
A quick side note. The pdf Manual that comes with THIS version of the game, which can be found in the game files, on page 39, in the 'Experience Levels' section of the page, "As you kill monsters and destroy their lairs, you gain experience points. The exact number of points for a fatal hit is shown on the screen." However in the version of the game that this manual comes with, the HP points do not actually pop up on the screen. So it must be missing. Or else it wouldn't be stated in the updated manual.
I actually see the EXP points given per kill, it's in white text stating "EXP: (number) "
Versions:
Steam, Zuxxez (european EN version, and probably PL, CZ, HU, DE versions), Akella (russian, oldest), Strategy First (american). Steam version = Zuxxez version (i think so), besides soundtrack/background music.
Differences:
Every version contains different soundtracks/background music, different voice-overs, language text depends on language version ofc, also, there may be differences in main menu. On top of that, american version contains different hud***, and those pop-ups. Not sure about akella, hud from their version should be like Steam/Zuxxez. Also, looks like "modified" date for Zuxxez files(and probably original "modified" date for steam files) is 03.03.2004 (with some exceptions, for example for files related to translations for particular languages). "Modified" date for many files from american version is 29.04.2004. So, there is a chance that they received newer files.
***similar, but some things are placed on different parts of screen, and there are golden borders for minimaps, just check that Bormac let's play. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CvhSA0aJ4Y4&list=PLvPGxXZPgG8PmNul0TpTF_uHcYhy1plMZ

If someone remember their old version, or just wants something different, here is guide made by Subsquentual. Currently only for en version. If you installed different steam version before installing en version, open regedit, visit HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Primal\Dragon
and make sure there is English written in language line, not something else.
Btw, manual from that package may be intersting, shorter, but contains interesting bits of story/lore.
Adding that hud for different language versions may be possible, but will be a bit complicated. It's easier if you want only voice-overs (Speech folder) or soundtrack (Ambience folder).
"The case may be that the features were meant to run on a specific setup within the program, which Win 7 doesn't have."
That's why (more less) music was bugged (not working in-game) on modern systems without fan-made patch. Since March there is official patch for steam version. Fortunately, it's not that bad for this different hud.
