THIS GAME IS SO BAD, IT'S GOOD.

Ok, there, I've said it.
But OF COURSE, it's bad. It's from Troma.

"WHO THE HELL IS TROMA?" you might ask yourself.

TROMA Entertainment.
The purveryors of crazy, zany, sick, twisted, hardcore, grindhouse, action/scifi/horror/romance cult movies in the universe of B-movies. That's who. They even had a Saturday morning cartoon show at one point. Their fame stems mostly from the movie: "The Toxic Avenger", a fugly, but "lovable good guy superhero mutant", and an assort of other movies, with other characters that have developed large cult followings. They've been around for about 40 years now.

SO now these guys have a PC game. ACTUALLY, about 15 years ago; said they didn't release it then, figuring the game would get totally banned.

THE GAME:
Starts with a disclaimer; and Lloyd from Troma pointing out you don't need it: you already bought the effing game! LOL, NICE! :D
Then, a "Troma" intro, a collection of clips from their many old movies: gross, gory, hardcore grindhouse, with boobs in one scene (more on boobs later). There's the menu, pretty straightforward. Start a New Game.

The game is an isometric, tactical, turn-based, squad-based shooter.
You start out with 3 dudes: The Toxic Avenger (Toxie), Sgt.Kabukiman, and The Stranger.
Your goal: to wipe out the Surf Nazis (see the movie "Surf Nazis Must Die").

The game is very similar in handling to the original Fallout game, but with complete emphasis on COMBAT only. Even the inventory menu looks inspired, so fans of Fallout 1/2, will find some familiarity. When you bag someone, they die, leave a bloody mess, and their loot in a nice pile for you to pick-up through the inventory screen.

Everything costs action points. Action points to walk, action points to shoot, action points to reload, to move things in your inventory even.

The game is divided into "missions". The level areas aren't big, this is not an RPG, this is a pretty straightforward clean and sweep game: GO AND KILL ALL OF THE BAD GUYS.

From this point, that is all you do. There isn't anything to interact with, but you can blow away all the different pedestrians with names with the likes of: "Hooker", "Freak", "Fat Guy", "Crazy With A Shotgun", etc. Some will randomly draw weapons and shoot you. Shooting a "overworked office worker" might yield you some loot, like booze, drugs, money, a mobile phone, a porn mag, or whatever. Most of the loot appears to be just "novelty" items. The only things of value are any weapons/ammo they have. Like Fallout 1/2, you can waste ANYONE, but there is no "karma" penalty in this game.

You can also target individual parts: legs, torso, or head. Just right cilck on the target to get a small menu with attack options. Works well.
However, it doesn't seem to really do anything. For example, you can't blow off legs or heads.
Haven't seen any animations other than the character falling to the ground, and then a pool of blood appearing. I noticed when I shot someone with alot of strength still, in the head, they died immediately.Other times, I aimed for the head, and they were just lightly wounded.

I suspect this is probably something they never had time (or budget) to finish or properly implement.

To complete the missions, you only have to snuff out the BAD GUYS (with various weapons).
Once that is done, there is a "Thumbs Up" button that appears.
Click it, and you are done.

Between missions, you are treated to the narrator telling the story.
LOL. Man this is so bad. Sometimes, you will see a random, non-sequiter video clip. One, shows the creators of South Park in a fake commercial about hermaphrodites. Another, of Lemmy from Motorhead doing a weird PSA type thing. Another is a metal music video. Another is a montage of super-gory moments from Troma movies.

(**NOTE, you will miss these if you "left-click". I tried "right-clicking" and then they played. However, the game glitched-out when the next level started.)

Graphics:
Not bad for a game 15 years old. There isn't anything to interact with, there isn't a load of detail in the hand-painted backgrounds/levels, but the areas are diverse and seem to look better as you progress. The animations were good.

Sound:
The sound FX are alright, a couple times, they didn't play, but was rare and only in an instant.
A couple of sounds, seem to be right out of Fallout, like when reloading or messing with the menu. Hmmm. When you kill someone, they let out a really long, over-the-top blood-curdling scream. The characters/NPCs will make funny comments or noises at times. Like, Toxie might run out of action points while trying to go somewhere you told him to, and will stop and say something like:"Yeah, I'll get to it as soon as I finish taking my toxic waste dump!"

Music: Varies, from PORNO music, to alot of SKA and METAL, with R or X rated lyrics. It's like they couldn't afford GWAR and got some other bands who weren't as extreme. The narrator might pop-in once in a while to give a game hint. Whatever.

PROS:
-Straight-forward, old-school Turn-based Squad Action
-Good bloody, dark humor
-Interface design is simple and efficient at the same time
-Novelty of playing classic cult characters from the TROMA movies and fighting other characters from the movies
-If you like games like POSTAL, you'll feel right at home
-Great music
-the game proudly doesn't take itself seriously
-Tons of bonus features, including old CD-ROM style Macromedia player interface (will be in your Steam folder), where you get a bunch of "behind-the-scenes" stuff. A lot of blood, boobs, and booty. There is a whole section of the "Tromettes", hot, naked/scantly-dressed chicks in sexy or PORN-Y poses.

CONS:
-Seems like you never get enough action points to do things
-Some lite-RPG elements would have been nice
-Inventory system is glitchy as heck!!!! I recommend when clicking an inventory/ground object, to click REAL FAST (tap) and do this in the upper-left corner of the object. Glitchy inventory system can cause you to easily pick-up/put-down an object costing you valuable Action points
-How managing your inventory is never explained well. For example, took awhile to figure out character's "backpacks" can hold seemingly infinite amount of items!!
-For a "Troma" game, it greatly lacks the gore; it feels dare I say: unfinished? Fallout, Arcanum, Postal, and just many others games even from that time, were bloodier, gorier. So this was a disappointment.
-Sometimes, you'll spend TOO MUCH time hunting for that ONE LAST ENEMY on the map
-Game mouse-scroll is way too fast and there is no way to use the keys or to slow it down
-Wished the world was more detailed and fleshed out
-Rough around some edges

MAYBE:
-Permadeath! If one of your first 3 guys gets wasted, they're OUT.
You advance into the next missions with whoever survived. OR, if you can reload from your last saved (you can save whenever)
Some people will like this, some will not. So far with my game, I got a hot chick added in one mission.
-Doesn't seem to be anyway to restore health during a mission, so might be too challenging for some.
-Sick, Troma style humor isn't for everyone (gosh, maybe anyone, LOL)

OVERALL:
Remember, it's not an RPG or even some big epic game.
AND DON'T TAKE IT SERIOUSLY!
You go out and kill the bad guys (and whoever else). That's it.
It would be interesting if they make a new game where they implement more things to do, more gore, more interaction, etc.
Some will FAP to the (mostly partial) nudity in the game (or tons in the bonus features), others might FAP to the silly, ridiculous violence.
If you're a TROMA fan, you'll probably FAP to all of it.

It's worth 0.00$ that I spent on it.

hold the same standard as there film work. i once met Lloyd Kaufman, he was the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ nicest dude, we ate canned nuts together that he so graciously offered, then running into him again later that day for him to introduce me to some of his friends.... and he remembered my name yo. like what ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ celebrity does that.. dude will get my money every time for being a solid dude. play this ♥♥♥♥ but funny game go buy some troma movies and give lloyd a can of mixxed nuts if you see him.

Toxie, Sgt. Kabuki, some jerk and a girl vs everything that's wrong in the world.

OK, now this will be hard to explain to people with no idea about what this game is all about. I mean, right after you'll click that green “play” button in your Steam client, you'll see a fast stream of screwed up images. Which include rotten flesh, baseball being stuck in somebody's naked butt, tons of blood and severed limbs, boobs being shot off by rifle, a dude giving corncob a blowjob... Like... what... the f*ck?! What is this perverted crap that looks like something that came directly from Ted Bundy's sick mind? Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the world of Troma Entertainment.

Long story short, Troma is an American independent film company founded by Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Herz. They've started in 70s, with the cheesy sex comedy Squeeze Play!, but the thing is – they didn't even try sticking with certain genres. They did slashers, they did monster movies and so on. Sounds pretty boring, since, let's just admit it, America is full of those small teams that make indie movies, but there is that certain thing about Kaufman and Herz. The thing is – the guys are freaks. Think of the most crazy sh*t you've seen in the movies and still, as long as you haven't seen Troma's sh*t? Let's just say you didn't see sh*t. I mean, think about it. When Troma decided to release some of their movies on YouTube for free, YouTube banned them for being too f*cked up. That's the guys we're talking 'bout here.

But you know what? Such an approach is exactly why Troma was able to establish a pretty solid fan base. I mean, let's just admit it – we're all different. And different people find joy in different things. One man's trash is another man's treasure, right? And that's exactly how it is about Troma. There are many people out there who find regular entertainment quite boring and limited by society's strict rules. It's... very hard to explain for those who find such stuff shockingly unpleasant, but there are people who think that watching fat guy puking is... entertaining. And Troma? Not only they welcomed such people with open arms, they became a leading force for them.

The release of The Toxic Avenger in 1984 marked a very important milestone for the company. A movie about screwed up mutant with a broom turned Troma into the cultural phenomenon. It wasn't just a small indie company making crappy movies nobody cares about anymore. The guys became an icon for strange minds. An icon that wasn't afraid of flipping society with all of its moral standards off. After The Toxic Avenger became famous, things only went even more crazy. The titles alone can make you go “FFFUUU...”. Seriously. Surf Nazis Must Die, Rabid Grannies, Chopper Chicks in Zombietown... Man... Not only Troma wasn't afraid to insult people or hurt their feelings. They did their very best to get people out of their comfort zones. While being totally natural. If you ever saw that AVGN episode, in which Lloyd joined James Rolfe in his show, you know exactly what I'm talking about. He was out there, doing the Nerd thing, which means tons of dirty jokes, and yet, he was more natural than Nerd himself. He stole all the spotlight. Because honestly, he was doing that dirty crap long before Nerd was even a thing.

Anyway, you've got the idea about Troma. Now, it's time for us to finally talk 'bout the game. Which... requires another history lesson (sorry). Back in 1997, a small Arizona company Running with Scissors (whose logo always reminded me of Troma's Beware: Children at Play! poster) released POSTAL. A minimalistic action game in isometric projection. It was a pretty poor game and it sure looked like crap, but somehow it ended up being a surprise hit and spawning its own franchise. That even included a movie. Directed by Uwe Boll... Good grief... Anyway, Troma wanted something like that. And it made perfect sense. I mean, RWS and Troma? Those were totally thinking alike and their products sure had the same vibes. And guess what? Polish studio called Nekrosoft was there to please. The guys already had a game called Rezerwowe Psy (an obvious nod to Quentin Tarantino's Reservoir Dogs movie). Which was pretty much exactly that – a POSTAL game. With the only one difference (aside from being even more cheap that is) - Rezerwowe Psy was a turn-based title.

Like in POSTAL, we used to arrive at the certain map and were supposed to kill all the enemies (marked by red dots on map). There were civilians too and it wasn't necessary to kill those, but... yeah. Since it was POSTAL, you were able to do that. Men, women, children... Rezerwowe Psy allowed us to kill 'em all. Because video game logic. Ah, and of course, trash humor was there too. Rezerwowe Psy was a game, in which seeing photos of the erected ♥♥♥♥♥ in hats was considered normal. Again, you can see why Troma decided to work with Nekrosoft, right?

The problem is – Nekrosoft were... well, I've already mentioned ♥♥♥♥♥, so... yeah, that's exactly who they were – some ♥♥♥♥♥. Some ♥♥♥♥♥, who loved money, but didn't want to do any job. So-o-o... guess what they did? Tha-a-at's right. They took their Rezerwowe Psy, changed some of the playable characters to Troma's most famous guys (like Toxic Avenger and Sgt. Kabukiman N.Y.P.D.) and... called it a day. I'm serious. The Troma Project is the same exact Rezerwowe Psy game. With the same exact levels, the same exact enemies, the same exact items and menus, the same exact everything. Just with some Troma's characters (Surf Nazis included as enemies), music, random clips from the old movies used as cutscenes (there's a couple of exclusive videos, though) and missions narrated by Lloyd Kaufman. Aside from that? It's the same exact game. With the same exact visuals and same exact... everything.

If you're old enough to remember the Famicom / Famiclone scene, or just know your retrogaming, you're aware of so-called “hacks”. When some random guys used to take an official video game, replace a couple of characters with somebody else and... well, very often, those were sold as the original products. In China, things like that were everywhere. Thanks to that, we've got games like Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers 3 (Heavy Barrel hack, in which we had two chipmunks with guns), Darkwing Duck 2 (Super Contra hack, in which DD fought alongside Negaduck) and Batman & Flash, in which DC superheroes replaced monsters from Monster in My Pocket. The Troma Project? It's exactly that. It's an old Rezerwowe Psy game from 1999, in which some of the characters were replaced by those from Troma. With no reason whatsoever.

And no, it wasn't a good game to begin with. I can't say it's completely unplayable (as long as you loved the original POSTAL and don't mind turn-based approach, you can still play through it), but still, it's a crappy product. With terribly cheap, ugly and random gameplay, which makes the original POSTAL to feel like masterpiece. Nekrosoft is just one of those ultra-crappy developers who can't even pack their resources properly (the entire thing lies there in MP3, BMP and MPG files). In other words, no matter how you look at this, this game is one fat “no”. Even if you're a die-hard Troma fan. Dixi.

X-Com meets Tromaville. I like both so I enjoy this one. If you are not a fan of turned based games and or the Troma movies, then this game isn't for you.

I only played the first two missions so far, but it is fun. Control Toxie, Sargent Kabukiman and a new character the stranger and show why Surf Nazis musst die!

Loyd Kaufmans narration is great, and the soundtrack is nice too (It consists of the soundtracks of the movies, and various metal and punk music, very fitting and fun to listen too, again if you enjoy that type of music). There is also plenty of Troma movie clips. Again highly recommended if you like turned based tactics like X-Com/Fallout/Jagged Alliance and if you like Troma.

This game is reskin of "reservoir dogs" - another game from Nekrosoft. Just much worse.
90% of game play was cut out (for example you can't heal your heroes between missions).
Actions points apply to your every action - even picking something up in your inventory, and putting it down. And if you picked up something and don't have AP for putting it back - all that left for you is to press alt+f4 xD

Game has good soundtrack though.

Sadly... nope. This is a turn-tactics strategy game. It's pretty basic. There are several missions and several weapons try. The gameplay is basically shooting, taking coverage and shooting again till all the enemies are dead. Maps are varied but not much change except the increasing number of enemies. So, as a game, is kinda poor. Now, it does shine in the Troma stuff. It's raunchy like any Troma's low budget movie. That aspect is really amusing and keeps you playing, but...

Bugs.

Even when the game is not that good I was willing to finish it just for the laughs but later, after a clean run of several missions, I got to a point when any action just froze the game and I had to kill the program every time. Maybe is a Win 7 thing, dunno. It includes cards and is pretty cheap if you want to test your luck. Despite all the possible positives I could praise, the main thing for a game is to work as it should. So no thumbs up for this one.

This is the worst game ive ever played

The game crashes once as soon as I get to the actual gameplay portion (the intro videos and menu plays fine).

As per this thread, seems to be a known issue for the last two years, possibly having to do with AMD graphics cards:
