First come up with a plan. Kill the weakest, take down the strongest, or call in an ally? I'll lay out a common scenario for you. 2 Giaks and a Drakkarim. During your first turn immediately use Sommerswerd. (Almost always do this because you want to max it out asap.) This can pretty much 1 shot a Giak. Now its 2 on 1. You can use weapon skills or Kai powers to disable the Drakkarim. But before doing this maybe you want to use a crossbow to poison and or cause bleed damage. Then use your strongest available moves to quickly kill the remaining Giak. Then turn your attention to the weakened Drakkarim.
You will get used to the flow of combat and eventually it will seem like you have all day to attack. Remember that you have several things you can do in your turn and they have their own separate timers and resources. Attacking with melee weapons uses adrenalin. Kai powers use Kai power. Ranged attacks can be used 3 times in a turn. You also have items you can use as well.

Combat is all about resource management first of all and enemy management. If facing more than one enemy, ALWAYS try to stun/disarm the other two, then focus on one and take it down. If more than one enemy can attack you at a time, you're going to lose.
If facing 1 big enemy and 2 small, stun/disarm the two smalls and focus the big one if you have full resources. If you're in a scenario where you're resource poor, try and keep the big one stunned and kill the two smalls quickly. Proper usage of the Sommerswerd is required until you 'level up' a bit.
It'll open up the radial menu, pausing the combat and giving you time to think.
