I've eyed this game for a long time and finally when the wife and I had some time, we decided what the heck. Local co-op, interesting premise, open world, silly, and something slightly different on the market. In short, relatively good gameplay, nice visuals and graphics, and a fun atmosphere all around. Few quirks, but will speak to those as the review goes on.

Revenge of the Savage Planet is second installment of the series. Revenge of the Savage planet has pretty decent gameplay that will keep players interested throughout its campaign. The game's premise has the player take on an explorer to (re)build a colony. The game isn't the typical base building type, the buildings are affixed to certain locations and more become available as the player progresses through the game (and onto different planets). The loading system is a little funny when it comes to having two players. Players can flawlessly transport between their current planet and the inside of their homebase, but if a player exits the homebase (with the other player on another planet) it grabs both players and returns them to the homebase planet. Same sort of deal when it comes to the upgrade or research menu. If one player accesses that menu the entire game pauses for both players and the screen become one menu. Weird quirk and sort of disrupted the flow of the game, but maybe designed that way for players to discuss what they would like to unlock next? 

The controls are relatively straight forward and improve as the player continues to pick up and unlock new technologies. The player has access to basic motions in the beginning such as jumping and the ability to grab onto cliffs (and climb up), but the true control and fun in the game comes later when more movement based mechanics become unlocked. Double jumping, weapons that carry more impact, a whip that can grab onto ledges (and eventually any surfaces), and so on. The game starts out a little slow in this regard, but I felt it got significantly better as my character was granted more options for movement. There are three basic attack variations: weapon (gun), whip, and kick. The gun doesn't change, but is slightly upgraded to have a charged shot, quicker reload times, and a few other perks. The whip is a weapon to impact certain enemies and more importantly, allows the player to access different parts of the map. The kick comes before the whip and still can be utilized by standing a certain distance from the enemies. Even though the attacks seem limited, there is something about kicking one of the enemies and having their reaction as they hit the ground and shoot confetti out. 

The visuals and graphics suit the silliness and humor of the game. Besides the gameplay, this realm also reinforced the idea that this game was truly made with a specific vision in mind and a lot of care to details. The way the character sprints, the way they slip on certain surfaces, the way the character reacts was all really well done.  The effects themselves were done quite nicely and everything seems to have some sort of animation related to it. There is one specific one when jumping Menus are easy to navigate and the Devs really made an effort to allow the player to find (for example) a teleporting station without having to spam the map menu button. Only issue I had here graphically is that I'm lucky to have two screens and couldn't split the local-coop screens to two different screens. Having tried programming, I can understand the difficulty behind that. The sounds and music were another compliment to the game. The dialogue for sure plays to a sarcastic tone, but keeps it real and progresses the story along nicely. The music does change given the situation the player is in (which sort of reminded me of Splinter Cell when danger was near) and the sounds themselves are quite funny. I know this is going to sound bad, but there are a few animals that resemble soccer balls and kicking them into the air and watching them explode ... is kind of satisfying... video game wise, not real life wise. Don't kick anyone in real life. 

Overall, the game was a little bit rough at the start. Wife had a few issues figuring out the cliff grabbing system. Some of the paths can be unclear sometimes but most of the maps were designed with specifics and details in mind. So the navigating part was a little confusing at first. Eventually we did settle into the game and then she tried doing that in different games that don't have that mechanic (which she complimented RotSP did a good job of). Once we beat it we did a few other missions but didn't quite see the point of continuing. That's ok though - some games are meant to be played and meant to have a finish. I enjoyed it, I'd recommend it on sale, and the local-coop simply gives you more reason if you're hesitant. This game was for sure made with love.

Revenge of the Savage Planet is a chaotic, colorful return to the weird side of sci-fi exploration and it absolutely nails what made the original fun while expanding it in all the right ways. The gameplay loop is incredibly satisfying, blending platforming, light combat, and discovery in a way that constantly rewards curiosity. Every corner of its alien worlds feels like it’s hiding something new, whether that’s a resource, a secret path, or a bizarre creature waiting to be poked, captured, or studied.

One of the standout improvements is the upgrade system. It’s deeper and more meaningful this time around, with research tied directly to the creatures you scan and capture. The more you experiment with the ecosystem, the more tools and abilities you unlock, which keeps progression feeling organic instead of grindy. Hunting down different species and figuring out how to safely capture them becomes a game in itself—and a pretty addictive one.

Replayability is another big win. With multiple distinct planets to explore, each packed with unique environments and hazards, the game encourages revisits with new gear and abilities. There’s always something you missed the first time around, and the design smartly nudges you to go back without feeling repetitive.

Boss fights are surprisingly strong, too. They’re creative, often requiring you to use your tools and knowledge of mechanics rather than just brute force. It’s a refreshing change from typical bullet sponge encounters and adds a nice layer of challenge.

Visually, the game leans into a stylized, vibrant look that works in its favor. The graphics aren’t pushing realism, but the bold colors and quirky designs give it a lot of personality. It’s the kind of game where the art direction carries more weight than raw fidelity and it pays off.

A really fun addition is the player room customization, which feels a bit like light player housing. You can decorate and personalize your space with items you find, giving you a tangible sense of progression beyond just stats and upgrades. It’s a small feature, but it adds charm and makes the experience feel more personal.

Overall, Revenge of the Savage Planet is a fantastic mix of humor, exploration, and progression. It doesn’t reinvent the formula, but it refines it in ways that make the whole experience more engaging, more rewarding, and just plain more fun. Highly recommend this game. Thanks for reading!

Solid sequel to the original. It's a fun game in co-op and has a great vibe. After a hour of 6-7 the game does get a bit repetitive though. Nonetheless it's fun with a friend to mess around and explore the various planets. I did like the first person view of the first game more. Not sure why they had to make it third person. If you can play this with a good friend, I recommend to pick it up on sale as it's not worth the full price, otherwise you can leave it as is. Overall, not bad, but also not great. I had fun but it's nothing memorable.
