Same here. I click on the crystal at the part I describe and 80% of the time, I have to plunge to my death. And that is me at arms length not really as far as some of the crystal shots go. And I did also think that the devs could also add an unlimited grapple option as another way to allow people to avoid the huge spike in difficulty, yet enjoy the story.
While I'm by no means a very good gamer, I'll like to offer you a few tips that have helped me finishing the ice cave level: First, you may not have realised that you can only charge your grappling hook from the crystals if you have still at least one grappling charge left. It took me quite some time until I noticed this. This might also explain Lahey's missed clicks. Second, try to release the grapple while you're still ascending. If you do that, you'll eventually reach the point where gravity pulls you back down again. During that time, when mid-air movement of your character is minimal, you should aim at your next target. Actually, there is no need to rush, just try to stay calm, click on the crystal (at the broken arch) once, and then aim at the next block.
That very moment in mid-air, where you're basically weightless, allowed me to do turns, orient myself and look for the next grapple target without too much stress. I hope it works for you as well!
But: the game doesn't inform you about that iirc, which is a huge design flaw and a shame imho!
Which shows it wasn't prominent enough since so many ppl have missed it, even Let's Play ers, like this guy, Scoop
Scoop's Let's Play - A Story About My Uncle - Ep.07 - Ice Cave Pt.2
At around 11:50 he explains he hadn't realized this, why it toök him so many tries.
Anyway i can't finish this game as i don't have enough patience for the ice cave and to make matters worse apparently people said it is only a few mins from the end of the game. i wasted hours and hours just dying over and over on this part.
i even started and finished an entire game now instead 'Lifeless planet'' best game i have ever played actually. Even managed to get it for free with another game.
Didn't that turn you off!?
Lifeless planet is dead easy compared to this game though but no the lava didn't turn me off. As you had quite a bit of control over jumping and air time , just quickly tap the jet pack upto 5 times before you land and gain alot of air in that game. Then you can easily jump past most danger spots. I did get a bit lost in the lava for a little while though. Just wasn't sure what was safe to jump on but it was overly generous with checkpoints. i finished lifeless planet in one sitting .
i really like the ending of both games and so glad i played both. I have never enjoyed or been so frustrated in gaming in equal measure -playing this since i originally played Demon Souls on PS3.
