How to prevent defection in Showdown at Xiapi Castle?

It's very difficult . I had beaten the first (protect supply depot and armory) and second wave (Jia Xu leads this wave). Then, the flood was flooding the Xiapi Castle after I beaten the second wave. There are many enemy officers who ready to inflitrating the Castle. I tried beat one of them to prevent the defection three officer, Wei Xu, Song Xian, and Hou Cheng. But, I always fail to do that, try again, and I fail. Any suggestions? What ther right way to prevent the defection?

I believe it's scripted unless you get Zhang Liao's strategem which involves defeating the officer(s) they're fighting against. Or was it about simply meeting up with them?

I may be completely wrong though.

Their defections cannot be prevented. If you're playing as Chen Gong, however, he can convince them to rejoin Lü Bu's Forces to trick Cao Cao.

Zhang Liao only fought on the other side, I mean he fought out of the castle near the Cao Cao's base. I tried meeting up with them, it doesn't work. As @TheOverlyMadHatter said below, meeting with them only works if we use Chen Gong on Battle.

I want to try testing the battle on lower difficulty (following Zhang Liao included). So, the result will be known how to prevent the defection when we are playing as Lu Bu.

I know about this, but I have to use Lu Bu in order to unlock the five-star weapon. It's really difficult. We run and beat them as fast as possible. I gonna to test some experiments on lower difficulty.

Ah. I guess the stage naming must've confused you. You don't unlock his five star weapon in "Showdown at Xiapi". You unlock it in "Xiapi Defensive Battle" in the "Others" Story Mode. That's where you can prevent the defections. Simply go to each of them and defeat the officers they're fighting with before they hit below half health.

If you don't have that stage, you unlock it by completing the Battle of Xiapi in Wei's Story (which requires you failing to save Dian Wei during Wan Castle).

It can be prevented. No idea what the conditions were, but I once must've tripped them accidentally because I didn't get their defections.

You sure you're not thinking about another battle or other officers? Because there's Xiapi Defensive Battle where you can prevent the defections, and there's two other officers who might defect (Zang Ba and Sun Guan) if you let the the Supply Caches and Armories burn. Also, it wouldn't make much sense to be able to prevent their defection as it's needed for Chen Gong's strategem, which is required to complete the stage.
