How do I use Bodyguard abilities?

So I'm playing with an xbox controller and I gather that I'm supposed to issue orders to my bodyguards using the D-pad but whenever I do, they give me some generic quote like 'taking enemy bases is great,' I see a message saying they're "Mobilizing," and then they just run headlong into the nearest group of peons and start swinging again.

Say, for example, one of them has "Fire Attack." Are there conditions to meet before I can use it? What should I expect to see? Is there a tutorial about this in the game that I'm just not finding? A guide somewhere that's helped you folks out on this subject?

Any insights are much appreciated.

use the command bodyguards in the pause menu. the d pad will only mobilize or guard. to order them to take a specific point or use abilities you need to access the pause menu.

Ah... there it is. Well, now some of these 'feats' in the free-play mode are actually making sense.
