Difference between the DW series?
Hi guys, I started with DW8 and it got me wondering, what's the difference between the different series?

Are the stories for the respective games focused on different timeline of the 3 Kingdoms' story?

After playing DW8, I feel the urge to purchase all the other series but again, I'm wondering if the stories are all the same. Wouldn't want to waste my money over the same thing ya' know. ;)

Any experts that could share their reviews and experience would be greatly appreciated. :p2chell:
Hmm, so does that mean that by owning DW8, I am playing the exactly same stories as told in the other series, and I have even more stories to unfold?

If that's the case, shouldn't people just get DW8 straight since the stories are all the same PLUS they get more content in DW8?
Hmm, okay, so it's like all DW have the Yellow Turban Rebellion arc and Guan Yu's death arc for Shu, just that maybe you are playing in another person's (those of not seen in DW8) perspective in the same arc?

story-wise : the key story is the same in every DW : Romance of Three Kingdoms.
There are 2 stories of RoTK.
1. the novel : in which you'll see Liu Bei as the guardian of everything just and holy while Cao Cao is the embodiment of evil.
2. the real history : in which you'll see all of them as what they are Warlords (and depicted Cao Cao not as evil as the novel

the key events are the same though, in order :
The Yellow Turban rise, Dong Zhou & Lu Bu arc, Warlords having free for all battles (battle of Guandu), the rise and battles of the 3 kingdoms era, and finally the fall of 3 kingdoms and appearance of Jin dynasty

Each DW differs slightly in gameplay, although all of them are hack & slash, the earlier DW is much simpler, you can ignore everything and go on rampage alone and still the story move on.

DW8 you can change some history (i.e. Pang De in DW on PS2 will always die on Fan Castle siege no matter what you do to save him)
DW8 also didn't include several parts of the story that is not included in the game i.e battle of Jieting (Shu vs Wu) that is included in earlier DW

TL:DR - the main story for all DW are the same (you can't change the core story of a historical event and popular literature) but bits and pieces are different
one thing never change: it's...its LU BU!... *peons running*:blissful_creep:
Thanks Lie Chen Zhou, now I see a worth in getting the other series for those "bits and pieces" of difference you mentioned. Just wanted to confirm if the details are exactly the same but I guess I have my answer now.

I suggest trying DW in PS1 & PS2 to save money since you are interested in the story, you can download the emulator for free. Or play the RoTK strategy games (RoTK XI is a very good game albeit slow paced).

personally, I don't own every DW and I already got the bit and pieces from numerous games/manga/novel/movie that originated from the story

Thanks! That's a very helpful infomation. I'm very interested to see how DW portray the stories of ROTK, which is why I'm after the bits I might have possibly missed from DW8. I actually didn't know there's a ROTK strategy game, thank you for the suggestion as I will most definitely check it out. I can only hope it is really awesome!

Anyway, gameplay wise, I shall assume it's more or less the same? Story mode, free mode, ambition mode and challenges still available as well?

You're literally not missing anything by not buying the others, as they all have the same exact story.

for DW ? yes, more or less the same.. I don't think ambition mode in on PS2's DW though.
Alright, thanks for the info guys! :p2chell:
i cant remember off the top of my head but dw2-5 had the traditional charge attack system like this one, while dw6 tried a new combat scheme where you could endlessly chain normal attacks and had a renbu system instead of musou.

Most of the games also use items as character enhancers, others used purely weapon modifiers/skills, or a mix of both.

The different games in the series also feature different kinds of modes some (semi) exclusive to others. Such as create a warrior, destiny mode, and whatnot.

The older games had a smaller roster of playable characters as well, characters like Lian Shi and Wang Yi were gradually added as the series grew.

There was also character growth in which you had to get hp + dimsum, musou + wine, ATK +, defense +.

Dynasty Warriors 3 had these whacky scenes that were quite humourous as well.

Dynasty Warriors 5: Xtreme Legends is probably my favorite, it had many stages that are not present in the newer games.

DW:Next is pretty fun too, the stages are shorter though it does feature its own unique gameplay with the touch controls.
Thanks ☹! That gave me more insight onto which of the series to start exploring first. Haha!

Warriors Orochi is pretty great too, you get to have 3 active characters at the same time from both the universe of Samurai Warriors and Dynasty.

It features a roster that dwarfs any single games in either series and has other things like triple musou attacks and character types.
Ah, I've heard of Warriors Oroichi and is quite interested in it too. Though I didn't get the chance to play it since I lack the consoles required.
