Yes, you can play local co-op in full campaigns (I assume it is "Story Mode"). But, remember, the second player must join for each battle. Because each battle has different characters that you can play. It save the progress (depending what character you choose, progress means your character level and so on).
I have played this series using PC-controller. It works properly. But, I saw some people have trouble or issue with the controller. Please, refers to related old discussions.
Also I'm not completely sure in this game, but I know Koei games usually Game Over if either player dies without allowing the other to continue or revive their partner, so if that is the case in DW8 be prepared to yell at eachother a lot if you play on any difficulty higher than normal.
Seriously Koei should have learned a thing or two from the Sengoku Basara series, they made that thing run well on a Wii of all systems with minimal pop-in, and made campaings very accessible for multiple players without instant game over states when someone died.
I'm sure it can still be fun, but if you know of any *better* alternatives, I'd love to check that out.
If this is the best PC has to offer for co-op action slasher action .. I suppose I'll bite.
Also from what I hear One Piece Pirate Warriors has issues including gameover state problems but it's actually one of the few Warriors games that doesn't have game breaking pop-in issues whenever there are a lot of people on screen.
Sadly there aren't that many games in the Genre, and unfortunately Koei has had a hand in most of them (Unfortunate because Koei are lazy, don't have any sort of quality control, or any respect at all for PC customers, and generally hold customers outside of Japan in disdain, and they'll never put any effort into increasing the popularity of their franchises outside of Japan).
