Alternative for Single-Player Alt+F4 prevention
So, I have to say, I really have been enjoying this game. But something has to be done about the Alt-F4 penalty for single player. I haven't played much, but I was really pleased with the game and was having a blast. I had just used my skaven deathtraps to annihilate most of the enemy human warband on a brutal mission. I was throwing my hands up in the air in excited victory. And then, it happened.

The game crashed. I shrugged. It's beta, and it happens. I booted the game back up, excited to continue the onslaught. But to my horror, it said I was defeated. My routing of the enemy turned into both my leader and night runner dying outright. I didn't even have the money to replace them.

If you don't want hordes of angry people requesting a refund, this has got to stop. I don't care if it stays in multiplayer. But for campaign? No. All it would take to stop campaign scamming is an autosave mechanic that would allow you to continue where you left off for single player; have it save after every turn, and/or after each trap/overwatch you spring. That way, there's no scamming it. And if you crash, you don't suffer a soul-crushing defeat.

At the very least, if you've already hardwired it into the game, have it check for single player. And if it is, make it a voluntary rout instead of a hard one where all 5 are considered defeated. Anyone who has any problem whatsoever is going to scream bloody murder, especially if they were reveling in their victory at the time.

I love this game already. It's an absolute blast, and I've really been looking for something like this. But I'm only a few steps from ragequitting already because of this, and I'm afraid to even start a new game lest the game crash again (through no fault of my own) and be pushed out of my campaign. I know funding is always tight for development and you have a lot on your plate, but if stability doesn't improve, this is crippling even for honest players.

TL;DR: Penalty is fine for multiplayer. Single player can be fixed by changing a crash/leave result (for campaign ONLY) to voluntary rout.

EDIT: Found out the save feature is being worked on. Would still like to see campaign use a voluntary rout.

This is being worked on (the save).

I looked around and didn't see that. Thanks for the info!

Still...in the meantime, I'd like to see campaign use a voluntary rout.
The only effective method they can use to prevent people from evading losses in singleplayer is if save files and game saves were server based. Currently, they are saved locally in your steam folder.
And I am having a blast at AltF4ring ( Is that a word?) right now just for the heck of it. Did it four times already.... MUHAHUAHUA!!!!!!!!!!! My copy and paste abilities are SO awesome. And imagine what happens when I use my üeberwarband in multiplayer....

This is an entirely separate issue. You can hack your save file regardless. All the current system does is punish people who are trying to play normally.

The devs launched a punshiment feature to band-aid fix multiplayer exploits. I get that. But applying it to single player, especially with the same severity, makes no sense.

Not exactly helping your case...

It's in SP because you're not supposed to be able to circumvent injuries or losses or just bad luck by disconnecting from the game. It should have been shipped alongside the autosave, true, but that's another matter.
Its my opinion that they shouldn't have bothered doing anything. You can still cheat by backing up your save files. There will be people who will workaround the alt+f4 auto defeat. Players could have backups of their best warbands for contest pvp.

They have made a lot of players mad and only slightly deterred the cheaters. Evading losses is still completely possible.

This Alt+F4 punishment did not stop the cheaters, it was a futile attempt. They need to use server based saving to keep everyone in check.
This comes to the logical conclusion: remove the Alt+F4 punishment.

Leave it in PvP, for the sake of determining the winner. That's a given.

Gday Bandaid. Could you tiptoe me through this please, including file locations?
Id like to make use of you 'save' system in case of crashes so I can have another stab without being punished for the crash.
Thanks

From what I understand from reading around, they don't have servers (due to funds) to hold the data, thus the local save files; I don't recall what they said the exact plan was to help things, but I believe it involved some sort of validation / synchronization check for save files. Anyway...the point is, we all agree this needs fixing.
I posted a guide on backing up save files. Check recent guides.
I did it in an effort to force devs to think smarter. If people can workaround their punishment, just remove it...

Just copy everthing in that folder into another one of your choice. Of course you have to do that after every game. If a crash occurs, just overwrite the files with your backup.
It just doesn't end with these people.

Whatever they do, it is useless. With no external servers involved, you can simply backup your files. If the use validation, also back up the game data. If they somehow put some hidden files somewhere, create a new partition with only os, steam and mordheim and backup THAT. And thats the brute force aproach which takes no skill whatsoever. They cannot win, and every moment trying to win is a moment lost for developing this great game. If someone cheats or abandons in Multiplayer, let the community handle it. There is already a blacklist over in the group Gentleman of Mordheim. If someone cheats in Singleplayer... who the ♥♥♥♥ cares???

Legend.
You have no idea how helpful that is. Really looking forward to playing now.
Thank you very much
