Books, Tomes, Grimores - Help!
I'm doing my best to plan out builds for heroes and henchmen that I intended to use, but I've read snippets hear and there about these special documents that modify stats (skills, spells?) and I'd love it if someone could post specific details.

How accessible are these items? What are their precise effects? Do they drop randomly, or are they guaranteed available from certain storyline missions? What are the restrictions on their use?

And and all information would be much appreciated since I can't seem to to find these items listed on the wiki or in any guide.

There are 4 types of books (Grimoire, Tome and two more. Yes, I'm very precise).
They give either
+3 Physical, Mental or Martial stat points
+3 Max to one specific stat (so you can increase it ebyond the normal max)
+2 Skill or Spell points.

You can only use 1 of each on a unit.
How available they are is hard to say, since max rank hasn't been available for that long.
However, they appear as faction rewards (rank 4 or 5, iirc), loot and randomly in the shops. They might also been rewards from story missions.

Best I can tell the Grimoires are available only from the story missions in the Library (one for each faction in Act 1). Haven't gotten very far in Act 2, so if anyone knows of a second set showing up later please chime in!

I believe Greybush is correct about the rank of the faction rewards that unlock the different Tomes. Haven't gotten to them myself, but the description says that once they are unlocked from Smuggler's Den they will be added to the shop rotation.

I should add that it was stated early on that they would be fairly rare, so don't expect to stock up on them easily.

You can get 2 of each for faction rewards (and it adds them as a rare item in the market rotation).

I am just going to call all of them tomes, and clarify what bonus they actually give. One is actually a grimoire, but I don't recall which is which.

Each of the 3 factions you have will unlock 3 of the tomes for a specific attribute that raises the maximum by 3 points, up to 20 for regular and 25 for impressives. These are one from each of physical, mental, and martial. As an example, your primary faction could give you Strength, Leadership, and Weapon Skill. Your second faction could give Toughness, Intelligence, and Ballistic Skill. The third would then give Agility, Alertness, and Accuracy. <- These are not the actual splits. These are unlocked at Tier 4.

Each of the 3 factions also gives a single tome that awards 3 attribute points to assign within a single category; physical, mental, and martial. The example would be Primary gives Physical, secondary gives Mental, and tertiary gives Martial. These are unlocked at Tier 5.

Your primary faction gives the tome that awards 2 skill points to spend. This is unlocked at Tier 5.

Your primary faction gives the tome that awards 2 spell points to spend. This can only be used on a spell casting unit. This is unlocked at Tier 5.

A single unit can only use one of each tome from the above paragraphs/lines. One tome of attribute, one tome of attribute category, one tome of skill points, and one tome of spell points if a spell caster. You are given two of each from the faction when your shipment arrives that unlocked the corresponding tier of favor. You also can find them in new market stocks after you have unlocked them.

If you are curious which ones are offered by which faction, you can look at the rewards for each faction.

Hopefully that wasn't too confusing.

Far from confusing, that was exactly the level of detail I was looking for. Thank you very much.

Can you confirm that the portion about using books of attributes to raise impressives' max stats above 20 is accurate? If so, how do you raise a max stat to 25? If I'm reading you right, you could only apply one attribute book to a single impressive yielding, at most, a maximum stat of 23.

You can also use runes to increase stats in addition to books.

It's only for Impressives, but you can add 4 extra stats from Runes and 3 from books to get 25.
