I got traumatized by the early builds of the campaign and lost several warbands to failed wyrdstone deliveries, now I always take Negotiator mastery. Probably just me being paranoid here but I like the skill.
After these two I'd recommend Explorer (normal) if you're a complete beginner, will help you gather more loot/wyrdstone from normal missions. Otherwise I also like Renowned (normal).
If you still have veteran points, get "Contact : leatherworker" (Skavens and Cult) or "Contact : armorer" (Mercs and sister). Armors can't be looted so it's often hard to find a set, and hard to lose them once you have them.

Late game / more than 5 veteran points = go for the Contact skills that fit your Warband.
Scholar is great as is the hiring one. I'd rather not spend time grinding gold and more time leveling new warbands with different builds.
Renown ( 20% off of all hiring costs will save a lot of gold).
While I picked Negotiator, you can live completely without it with no problems once you have got the basics of the game down. I will try to go with what Cha0s_lord said next time as Armor is indeed the hardest to come by.
