GPU overheats when game is minimized
So quick overrun on my systems specs.

i7-6700k
16 gigs of ram
2x512 ssd
980ti zotac amp extreme (Driver version 368.81, one of the more stable ones for me)
x2 Dell S2415h monitors

I noticed when ever I run the game and even play for an a while, my temps very seldom exceed 61-62c. But I noticed something strange just the other night, something which I have yet to see a thread for anywhere else. When I minimize the game, (i didnt see a fullscreen borderless option) to change a video on youtube, or watch something on twitch. My temps on my GPU suddenly skyrocket. It quickly jumped, instantly mind you, from 62c, to 79c. The highest I saw it reach was 82c, and my fans went into panic mode and were running around 90%.

This issue has not happened on any other game, and this computer is realitvely new, so I doubt its hardware related. I am more starting this thread to see if others have had a similar expreience when they minimize the game, and notice their temps rise like this. So anyway if anyone has experienced this let me know.

when you minimize the game it keeps running like normal plus the workload of twitch or youtube

Go look at the thermal specs on your GPU you didn't overheat. Also contrary to what you think, just because you alt tabbed out of a game in Windows doesn't mean the GPU stops rendering the program. That's not how it works.

Here is a screenshot of Overwatch running in the backround. Notice GPU usage because the GPU is still rendering the program regardless of if it's currently taking up full screen.

Its honestly not that. On my second monitor im always running either twitch or youtube, and it adds almost zero workload on my gpu. But simply minimizing the game should not make the temps skyrocket up 15 degrees just by minimizing.

Oh I know my GPU can easily handle the temps I posted. I just dont know why simply minimizing the game, would make it jump up 10-15 degress instantly. The youtube / twitch is always playing on the second monitor, and in-game the temps never go above 62c - ish.
Maybe I'll have to try this when I get a chance (or remember) on my 980Ti AMP! Omega. The game runs well across my 5760x1080 and the GPU, like yours, sits around 62C. I haven't done an Alt+Tab so I don't know what kind of results I'd see.

yeah let me know. Im not very concerned with this, as like you saw me mention, the game runs well and cool without me alt tabbing.

GPU usage spikes to 100% when you alt+tab and the game is in the background....

Okey dokey, so it isnt just me then. Thats good to know, im sure your temps also spiked when you alt tabbed as well.

I'd suggest you make a bug report with the specifics if you haven't already.
my advice is to go to nvdia control panel change Vsync to Fast and then set a FPS limit with afterburner or w/e

I have exactly this bug. This game is very badly optimized and ALT tabbing brings GPU load to 100% for me, this is ridiculous... I also get terrible coil wine from GPU from this game (which rarely happens with other games).
Bloodscape Sep 5, 2021 @ 10:35pm
It seems like the game runs all functions on the GPU itself and ignores the CPU as any source whatsoever. The workload of the GPU is extra high in this game. You can probably turn down the quality before tabbing out if you need to.
