No Mini map but it’s great that you reference the overhead map view, many do not.
At Deployment and the first Round, one often plans the optimal Wyrdstone-gathering and looting path, while noting the general direction of the enemy. After that the only reason to really open Overview is to mayhaps check a particular path or whether one has spotted the enemy or not.
So: 1: Yes, I guess many open Overview Map regularly, but it is not particularly necesary most of the time. And
2: Yes, you'll get the general layouts of the maps pretty soon. At least to the extent of not needing Overview beyond Deployment.
If you mean the overview of the map. Its a chess board. Then yes, you do want to check it for enemy movement and prize locations, so you don't end your turn in a bad position or halfway or an enemy comes out of nowhere. If you see for example a skaven near your soldier, assume he can reach you if close and plan accordingly. I would stick to "Near you wagon both sides missions" and try not to skip turn if you can, though it can be avoidable. You should be grinding doing missions each turn rotating 2 warbands to keep your rating and party members level evenly.
Random deployment is not wise. You have two choices launch mission, the AI sets your men or launch and deploy which should always try and select. You can then see the map layout and where the enemy wagon and even as you gain experience know exactly where the enemy will be on the map. For example, if you do a 'Wagon' vs 3 party battle and your at your wagon, You can then determine where his will be. 4 near his wagon, 3 to the left, 3 to the right for example and then plan your deployment in a manner best to either counter or search and destroy his weakest allocation.
Never and I mean never if you can help it chose scatter and then deploy auto, god help ya.
My point is you want complete control of your deployments, map overview and strategic planning for that mission at all times.
Be aware that even if you do a near your wagon mission, at a higher level, lets say brutal or deadly the AI could randomly decide to scatter your men and force a deadly encounter without yoru choice.
Mordheim will not reward you for bad strategy
