And lore wise, orcs would actually make quite a bit of sense.
Some sources (a fan wiki), Mordheim was once a bulwark against the eastern hordes, and its founding centers around fighting the orcs. This was all long before the disaster struck.
So orcs, certainly aren't strangers to the lands surrounding Mordheim. You also must keep in mind, that a warhammer orc, is not nearly as comical as 40k orcs. Orc shamans, black orcs, dark goblins, goblin shamans (remember, goblins and trolls fight with the orcs, under the greenskin banner) etc. can be pretty damn dark.
When you mention superheroes. Its like the horrible silver age creation which ruined the intesity of Batman and turned it into a joke. Same with Orcs and Dwarfs, first they are bright coloured either their skin or armor. Doesn't fit with the pretty bleak coloured other factions. Also why would they seek Warpstone? The Orcs wouldn't care and in the lore the Dwarfs are smart enough to stay away from it. So one of the core game mechanics doesn't work.
Then orcs are impossible to take serious alone from their way of talking. Dwarfs also with their silly over the top grudges(lets massacre an entire human city because one person in there paid us one gold coin less than agreed upon).
Yeah one could come up with some contrived reason why they are there but what I personaly like about Mordheim that it has the grittines and dark atmosphere of Warhammer in its purest for, all other Warhammer games include some of the goofier elements wich in my opinion makes Mordheim so uniqe.
If thesedlcs would ever come it would loose that, especially as even not buying the dlc would still put these factions in the game.
I mean I don't know, maybe they could work but I kinda doubt it, at least for me personally.
Remember, who left the explosive barrels that the human mercenaries use in one of their very 1st missions. It clearly states in the mission briefing, that they were left by a band of dwarven treasure hunters.
So while yet to be seen in combat, we can already assume there are some dwarven bands working in the city.
Dwarves could not only work, but they have actually been mentioned in game. Therefore not only would it be possible, but they would be the most likely choice lore wise.
In either case of Orc or Dwarf thou, one needs to not get carried away in their war ability aspects.
Mordheim is a game of small bands, not major armies. A single grudge, would be the entire line of story missions for Dwarf, but the bigger influence (as all war bands) is that profit off stone. Hell, avenging the lost band (the one that left the explosive barrels) could be the 1st act of story missions.
In the Orc case, it would be essentially a scout party, not a full horde, so Warrghh dynamics need not be considered. Also due to the scout nature, the war band would include nearly as many, or even more goblins than orcs. Impressive possibility could be a Troll (which seems the obvious choice to me). Remember, think greenskin, not just orc.
Its not too hard to imagine either lore wise with very few steps, and a lot of basis on the pre disaster history of city (what little can be found), and in game events. Surely, someone would check on the lost dwarven treasure hunters, and from greenskin point of view, checking out a recently destroyed place, that was built as a bulwark against your hordes, would be the exact thing for a small scout band to investigate.
Now elves, beastmen and others, may be a bit further to stretch to story wise. Takes many more steps to contrive a story for them, with little or nothing about Mordheim to tie either to the location.
After all, the current variety can somewhat be described as: greedy humans, womans, rapid humans, twisted humans and dead humans. And Rats.
Not dissing the game, but it IS slightly amusing. :b
But, at this point, I'd rather have a proper expansion or a sequel so that they can fix some of the more foundational issues while they are at it.
- new factions (Dark, High, Wood Elves, Dwarfs).
- expanded roster of existing factions.
We already have the 6 warbands from the main rulebook.
Then you have in order of their appearance in the Town Cryer supplement:
Dwarven Treasure Hunters -> Town Cryer n°4[broheim.net]
Orc Mob (Greenskins) -> Town Cryer n°6[broheim.net]
Beastmen Raiders -> Town Cryer n°7[http//hhttp]. They were rereleased in Town Cryer n°29[broheim.net] with ajustments like a Bestigor hero.
Averlanders (distinct human mercenaries) -> Town Cryer n°10[broheim.net]
Ostlanders (distinct human mercenaries) -> Town Cryer n°11[broheim.net]
Kislevites (Bears!) -> Town Cryer n°16[broheim.net]
Carnival of Chaos (Nurgle themed circus warband -> Town Cryer n°27[broheim.net]
Other warbands, like Dark Elves, Lizardmen,etc... were designed for another setting, the "Lustria cities of gold" setting, and not the main Mordheim one.
This is one of my regret regarding Necromunda. Instead of going WH40K, they could have created Mordheim II: Cities of Gold with an entirely new setting, new warbands and expanded mechanics, but alas it won't be so.
Personnally, I would consider the following warbands to be worthy as well as loreful additions to the setting:
- Distinct mercenaries DLC: Marienburgers, Middenheimers, Ostlanders, Averlanders would be added on top of the Reiklanders we already have. To make sure that it's not only a cosmetic DLC, each warband should get a dedicated additional unit. Middenheimer should have gotter the priest of Ulric this way, but for example, Ostlanders would get priest of Taal, Averlanders could get an Halfling scout, etc...
- Dwarven Treasure Hunters DLC
- Orc Mob DLC
-> Those two were released very close to the main Mordheim rulebook (early town cryers). Their rules were official. And they'd be welcomed by the community. They should have gotten priority.
- Beastmen Raiders
- Kislevites
-> Another set of Order/Destruction warbands, who I think would also fit well in the setting. More so than Shadow Warriors in my opinion.
And if really Focus would go for the lol effect:
- Carnival of Chaos
- Outlaws of Stirwood Forrest (Robin Hood theme band)
-> This would be a sight to see. :p
Hi-ho, rampantly negative conspiracy theories away!
