How do you manually backup saves? (save scumming)
Yes I know, the game wasnt intended to be played that way. And yes I understand most people frown on cheating, and yes I am bad at the game. Basically Im at the point where I am so frustrated with it that I am on the brink of uninstalling and quitting it, which is a shame because it can be fun.

Anyway where is the save files located for this game? And does anyone have links to guides on how to do this? Im sure they exist, I havent been able to find any yet. Id appreciate help, Ive tried to enjoy the crushing difficulty but its just not for me, however I want to give this a chance. I almost quit Darkest Dungeon for this reason, even left a nasty review. After I started doing manual saves I the game grew on me and to this day its one of my favorites. Please dont judge, thanks.

The save files are in your userdata folder.
Can´t recall the exact file name number for Mordheim though.

Then just copy that folder or some save inside somewhere else.

go into ur files ie:

c:>>>Program files (86)>>>Steam>>>userdata>>>steam id>>>276810>>>remote

Copy everything in that remote folder and put in a separate folder on ur desktop or whereever. Before you go into battle make sure u have a backup in that folder if things go wrong close out the game copy those files you had saved and replace the ones in the remote folder with em. Restart the game and your back to business.

Hey thanks guys I really appreciate it. All these kind of threads I found on google were people getting ridiculed for "cheating" and people attacking them. So its great to see not everyones rude and intolerant.

My game is a non steam version though, so that wouldnt apply to me unfortunately. Do you guys know the file name or any identifying features of the save files? I found a Mordheim data folder in my games/documents but it is only an options.sg file, is that it? Seems like that is only a preferences file.

Well, that does make it harder, since then the game will not have Steam userdata structure, which means that the saves could be anywhere really.

The only way I know how to identify a save file without context is looking if the folder contains as many files as I have saves, opening the file in a notepad or such, and looking for the Warband name from that mess of a code.

I back up my files about every 10 missions to avoid a rare overwrite bug but my advice is: Try to play without reload and you will feel a greater reward feeling.
That being said the file extension is *.sg (I think).

It used to be Greybush that would always say what I was just about to type in here. FCauldron looks to be going for his title. Amazing advice.

And yes .sg file extensions.

oh wow this is how you can do it?! wow :D

i had a similliar problem, i wanted to get into that game, but after 5 fails in over 30 hrs i quit and played something else because it got verry boring to repeat the start over and over again. i do not load every time something bad happens but i also dont enjoy it to have no backup saves.

just to get a bad roll on a mission again which spawns you in combat and kills half of your troops 1-2 rounds in the game after lets say 5h, and then you can not even try again...
just not fun, no good design in my opinion. then i just play something else...

but as it seems i need to give this game another try soon, it looked fun, but with no save system it was a bit too nasty to get into it.
i dont care about the ''cheater'' discussion, and i play SP only anyway... but at least it should let me at least finally play it how i think it is fun, and not how others think i should play it.

they really should add the option to save the game, maybe you would be excluded from pvp, kinda a ''light'' version.
but for peoples who are not into this special genre yet, it is almost impossible to get into it & to have fun.
and honestly, why do we play games?

Actual ironman is a lot more fun. It just can be frustrating until one understands the game. Mordheim isn't hard so much as unforgiving. Once one hits that tipping point its mostly greedy decision making that can result in problems. This game is quite good at encouraging greedy choices though...

I think its safe to say everyone had a rough first 10+ missions and in many cases multiple bands get beat up. Its a question of your tolerance for events not in your favor, patience, and speed of learning.

Personally I think the choice to go full ironman only was a good and brave one. I understand that non die hards of the genre will have issues getting into it as a result. Once that base level of understanding and comfort is established their is far more emotion involved for the player. Positive and negative. Thats what provides such intense experiences.

I find myself cussing and cheering still in Mordheim. Not so in XCOM - Long War, Battletech - Rougetech, Xenonauts X-Division (OK, sometimes), or Battle Brothers / Legends.

Mordheim's forced ironman along with encouraging risks in exchange for rewards to such a high degree is in part what sets it apart.

Funny to me how Darkest Dungeon caught on so well with ironman yet Mordheim is derided. I'd say one has a higher degree of control to mitigate RNG in Mordheim should one choose to.

Early days for a warband can get bloody. Sometimes I deliberately lose units to gain more XP or resources elsewhere early on.

So long as one walks away with as much value as they spend on mission costs and replacements it doesn't matter how many died or were injured in the early game. Its still progress. You'll gain traction eventually.

Maybe watching a couple missions run by an experienced player would cut your frustration immensely?

Regardless, I sincerely hope you give the game an honest chance. Its really a great and unique game despite its issues.

Every word, Catgrenade said, is true.
Don't ruin your expierence by cheating.

i can of course repeat myself...

i dont see it that way. no... you are wrong ;)
to save a game is not cheating, whatever you want to say, to me it is not.
neither do i have the time to finish every battle or to repeat something over and over again.
for me this is a SP- game, and i simply play games to have some fun. i do not care if you think it is cheating or not. i found that it works, and i will do it like that from now on i suppose ;)

You're not playing the game as intended. We suggest otherwise, but at the end of the day, it's nobody's business but yours. Have good fun!
Lexter Aug 1, 2020 @ 12:50pm
If you don't play the game as intended, you cheat. There is a reason, that you cant load old saves. Doesn't matter, if you don't call it cheating.

Saving a file every once in a while is fine if something catastrophic happens (game glitches and such).

A warband is SUPPOSED to be a flow of expected progression mixed with unexpected injuries. The game is based on how to deal with loss and continue on victorious. This is a trait that I coin "Generalship". Meaning, you are supposed to roll with the punches and move on, being flexible enough to replace a warrior or just deal with detriments on that warrior.

Using the reserve space is key here. Those are truly your "back-up" saves. Also knowing how the game works allows you to be more cautious with what scenario you pick.

I wrote a General Tip Guide[mordheim-city-of-the-damned.fandom.com] for the OP.

Note: save scumming can be done on the buyer and seller tasks (only)
