they all have strengths and weaknesses , I will tell you their strengths as you should pick a warband for what you like but also what playstyle most appeals to you .

if you like range and good armour builds go mercs

you like anti magic and not have to worry about fear and terror with some range and decent melee go witch hunters

if you like gambling where if your lucky you can have some of the best units in the game go possesed they get random mutations

if you like more movement to scout , charge , ambush while having decent dodge and crit go Skaven they have the highest movement

if you like decent melee and armour and mostly relying on magic for range go sisters of sigmar

if you like more control of holding enemies down go undead they have the most fear and terror units , have argueably the best spell caster to the necromancer can deal damage or buff zombies to make zombies have more movement then even a skaven that would be mid or late game though.

hope that helps , every warband has some sort of counter to terror or fear , and with the right skills you can improve upon your warbands strengths or tend to making thier weaknesses not as bad.

People like to say Mercs or Sisters are the easiest, but given that i had the most horrible time with Mordheim based on that advise i am going to give you a different one:

Play the ones that are appealing to you. Just give your Henchmen, until level 3, dual wield or 2handed weapons, as much as you can afford. 2 daggers is better than 1 one handed.

Keep your units together and focus on getting the Wyrdstone, not on killing the enemy.

Keep in mind your units are dispensable. Everyone can be fired.. make use of it.

And when you fight Vampires... their leader is best dealt with with Ranged damage and charges at low level.

For a new Player, Mercenaries. Or Witch Hunters, if you have the DLC.

Skaven require knowledge of the game mechanics.
Cult is fun but RNG-filled.
Sisters are quite heavy on Magic.
And Undead are a synergy-Warband.

Mercs and Witch Hunters are pretty straightforward.

Id say Sisters, tough, high leadership, got healing

If you have the DLC, Witch Hunters. Without it, prior to the addition of the Undead, I would have said Skaven, but now I'll go with Mercenaries.

I would normally say mercenary, but after much thought it is mostly this:

Any works for a new player to learn, just don't get attached to that 1st warband. They are expected to die horribly, and teach you more about what to NOT do, while building some basic veteran rank, so the 2nd warband will start stronger.

Your 1st few warbands as a beginner, will be throwaways.

This! Doubly so if one skipped the tutorials. Triply so if one skipped tutorials and forum guides xD Also there are some things in the game that cannot really be appreciated very well by just reading, such as:
a) whether it is possible to Disengage when close to a wall/door and
b) how big are unit circles aka 'can I squeeze into that space' aka 'how much empty space should I leave so that reinforcements can get around me'
All these mostly come with experience.

Sisters is most noob friendly. Strong melee, good at tanking. All but the purifier can disengage. Bringing a leader and purifier that can spam aoe healing eliminates 80% of the difficulty (when not blowing themselves up).

Honestly I found the Merc Band to be best for me...

The grand scheme of the Merc Tactics are spent around heavy tank like and armored Henchmen (Merc Warriors) tying up enemies while the Marksmen with their Black Powder weapons (handgun... read as smooth bore rifle... for armor piercing) pepper the incoming targets and decimate them before they even reach the merc warriors. Its formation based on a total team effort...

When I started I didn't understand that as much and it took me a while to figure them out... AND without realizing it wasnt' the way to do things, I ended up playing mostly Brutal level missions... this was the result...

After beating Merc Campaign Mission 2-3 I did not like... how I optimized my skills as I was a newbie starting out and some skills while good... just didn't fit the grand scheme of the tactics I was using... so I restarted a new Warband at level 5 and replaced my old one ONLY doing normal and hard missions... instead of mostly Brutal... and this was the result... most of these casualties were mages self destructing on Tzeench Curse....

As you can see once I understood the general tactics of the Merc Band and how to use it... (and stopped playing against superior Brutal level opponents.... the kill ratio went way up...

I realize after all this time with my first Merc Band I was taking on Brutal level opponents... while every normal person that plays this game doesn't do that right out of the gate.... so perhaps I made the game harder for myself than it needed to be. But I still won anyway... at a 96% success rate anyway....

Me, too. My main reasoning is that early on, it's the henchmen who will do most of the heavy lifting, and the Mercs have arguably the best ones: Marksmen are clearly the best ranged henchmen in the game, and Warriors arguably the best melee henchmen.
Silverquick Feb 12, 2017 @ 6:25pm
Yeah Lampros,
The Merc Warriors were just outstanding tanks... throw in the Markmen with Handgun (smooth bore rifle/armor piercing)...

...then in my case a Ranged Commander using Pistols who by the end was doing 210 to 240+ damage per round... and Youngblood with Dueling Pistols doing a good 150-200 damage per round.

The Champion with upwards of 75% armor resist and capable of tanking just about anything... The Wolf Priest with Ice Nukes doing 40-50 damage each... the Warlock doing 180 damage with his Lightning Strikes...

And the fire power behind all those heavy tank Merc Warriors who all had a good 55%+ armor resist as well... and anything that comes in as a single target is slaughtered in one round... and is doing such miniscule damage to the Merc Warrior tanks.

When I was on Merc Mission 2-3... I ended up taking on 3 Demonettes, the Alluress, the Sister, and Marauder all at once... well most of them at once, with the last Demonette in rapid succession and killed them with no casualties.
Solar-Monkey Feb 12, 2017 @ 7:25pm
Sisters are by far the easiest, as someone who played them all, I never lost a single legit game with them.
