How does 3/4 player co-op work?

Ok, I bought this game hoping that this would be an easy local co-op experience for me, the wife and the kid but from what I can see it's not immediately obvious from the menus in the game how to set up 3 player co-op.

Am I just missing something? I have 3 wireless Xbox controllers hooked up to the PC and the hope was to use this set up for this game?

Is this even possible? (I know it works in the technical sense as we have used this method in numerous other games but does Guacamelee support this method).

So after playing the intro, getting the mask, it will give you the option to play
then you simply hit the A buttion on each controller during the game

Had the same problem with this game's gold edition: It's not made explicit that multiplayer only activates after going through an initial bit of the game. It's a really short segment though, I can understand if the devs assume that people will play through that bit before they give up.
