Just in case you still have this issue, I found a workaround on my first playthrough:
First of all, get the Skeleton and Alebrije costumes, those two costumes can really help on some of the challenges, Skeleton for the unlimited stamina (and if you're going for a gold medal you don't worry about health), and Alebrije for triple damage (when you have to move through the challenge quickly and there's enemies in the way, this is really useful on the Final Challenge).
Anyway, for Challenge 2 you'll need the Skeleton costume and the Dashing Derpderp. Simple enough: use the Dashing Derpderp repeatedly on enemies. Combo-wise, you get +3 for each enemy the Dashing Derpderp hits, the enemies will take 2 to 3 Dashing Derpderps to die, and you'll get an extra +2 when they do so. If you do it flawlessly, you'll get your combo up to 330 (and all you need is 200).
Hope it helps.
I tried playing Challenge 2 in GE again and noticed that the combo count for gold is much higher (400) than in STCE. Then I started a new game in STCE and tried Challenge 2 before buying the aimed throw upgrade. Sure enough, it's fairly straightforward to meet the combo count for gold. Then I tried the method you described above. Took me a few tries to not get hit by a bone from that first wave of red skeletons. Got it eventually. Good thinking!
Does STCE have a costume that reduces throw power? I thought they changed it.
Anyway, seems like Goat Fly would work just as well, as it greatly reduces the chances of getting hit. Time to experiment... and I got 300. A lesser combo, but really easy to pull off.
Also, I don't think there ever was a costume that reduces throw power... Back in GE, the 'Identity Swap' costumes reduced how far your Aimed Throw would go, but the power remained the same, but in STCE is just a cosmetic costume. Goalkeeper's Aimed Throw power is the same, but the distance you can throw an enemy is greatly increased, it also reduces the amount of damage melee moves (AKA: Anything that doesn't start with an enemy grab), which can help when you want a high combo.
