Could be games sell better than DLC packs and this would differentiate it somehow.
To me, this was extremely confusing. I had to spend at least 20 minutes looking around and reading until I could to figure out what was new (not located in the FAQ thread), if it's free w/ my current version of the Gold game, if it is worth the purchase, etc.
@devs What was the reason for doing it this way? Why a new game than a DLC upgrade? Would you even be able to change it at this point or do you know?
Yes easier because they did the alternate version for the PS4.. change their compile target and assets (most of their other pc specific code was there from the original game) where needed and bobs your uncle.. PC version.. Easy money.. Easy to rationalise.. they sold the two different versions on the playstation (PS3/PS4 - but only one on each) and they probably saw the same people buying it again when upgrading their console and wanted some of that on the PC side as well.. I can see their view from a sales perspective, but I dislike them not factoring in alternatives that the platform allows..
I also dislike the confusion this generates, the automatic contempt that the dev generates for themelves, and the feeling (my own) that people will buy anything again when there are better (proven) ways with how steam works that it is not necessary to follow the console model..
- EVERY level got reworked, and we tried to remove parts that were "cheap"
- EVERY combat arena in the game was examined, and most got new/different enemies to make it more fun
- EVERY enemy in the game had its HP, Damage values, attacks, etc. examined and tweaked where necessary
- The player's attacks and moves got updates as well
Hence, why DLC couldn't work. The changes go deep. TALKING UTTER CRAP AND YOU KNOW IT ... and bring on all the defenders that like to pay for the same JUNK over and over and try and convince everyone elce its value
Anyway, I know you guys need to make payroll and eat (shocking!), but this really feels like I'm buying the game twice. I have no problem with supporting developers for additional work they do, but that work should go beyond what appear to be bug fixes and game design fixes. In short, I should feel like I am getting value I was not otherwise entitled to for the $5. The approach here of coupling bug fixes, that should be provided to all users, with additional conduct does not make me feel that way. Rather I feel as if I am being extorted into buying 2 extra levels so that I can access fixes that should have been provided as part of the intial price of admission.
Now maybe this all comes down to perception. I fully believe that is possible. But in another sense it feels as if the parody has instead become the business practice. In any case, I thank you guys for an enjoyable game, I just wish this could have been handled differently.
Here's the thing. Whether you're right or wrong... if you already own Guacamelee you get 67% offffffffffffffffffffffffff... so you're only paying a DLC price anyways.
Guacamelee Gold is inevitably going to be on sale and in bundles quite a bit now. So if you're completely new to the series and want to experience the pre-update world, grab Gold for $4 or $5 (it's in a BundleStars even as we speak!), enjoy it, then get your "Turbo DLC" for a deep discount.
¿What's the problem hombres?
From now until the end of (valve) time you will have the inferior version of the game sitting around in your Steam library with potentially unfinished achievements. If the new edition of the game would've been released as a DLC patch at the same cost, you would not have had these problems.
The developer is talking bull when stating that 'the changes run too deep'; there is no technical reason outside of save-game compatibility that this could not be done. And regarding save game compatibility; there are plenty of games that break save-game compatibility in some form or other even on regular patches. (Most recent example I know of being Tropico 5.)
Were this upgrade offered as a DLC for the Gold Edition, then the developer could've unlisted the separate Gold Edition of the game from steam's store, created a package with the Gold Edition + the Turbo DLC and put that up on the store for new buyers, where existing owners could still be offered just the Turbo DLC. With that you'd be avoiding the cooky special-cased 'if you already own the Gold Edition'-discount as well.
Altogether, it disgusts me that this is the way we are being served the Turbo upgrade and I, for one, am going to vote with my wallet and will not be purchasing.
