Is there any point in surviving the night on normal?
If I just stay in my hideout and die there every night without items on me... what exactly do I lose by doing that?

You only miss out on free morning Reputation with the daily Trader, generally. Some random night events can be particularly profitable in terms of items gained, though.

It's worth noting that the original (and only) difficulty for a long time was Nightmare; the devs fully intended the game to have the pressure of permadeath. "Normal" was added in the tail-end of Early Access per player feedback.

That's why normal difficulty is extremely casual.

Same reason why hard difficulty is the best one for the game and should be played after completing normal one once.

Hard is definitely the best. I never ever liked perma-death difficulties, for the fact that it's a consequence rather than difficulty. Completing the game on normal vs nightmare is literally identical, only difference is that in one if you die you just reset.

Hardmode the mod with Hard as the set difficulty is my definition of peak gameplay. Though far more volatile, as i remember one night in the swamp playing that mod, i had 2 manspiders, 2 dogs, at least 2 chompers, and a centipede spawn roughly at the same time. That was a one time night it seems as the worst i experienced on my next playthrough was maybe 3+ chompers and a centipede.

I definitely prefer the idea of the difficulties altering the gameplay rather than consequence.

I thought the only change was adding extra lives that have to be managed? (Basically Hardcore with extra lives)

Blessed devs. *prayer hands emoji since Steam doesn't have it*

Hard is just Nightmare with extra lives, yeah. I would honestly prefer a simple checkpoint at the start of each day. As it is, Normal difficulty has no penalty for dying at all and Nightmare deletes ALL of your progress upon death. On Hard, there's no penalty for dying UNLESS you were on your last life.

Yeah pretty much, or just normal with limited lives. At the end of the day same thing, which is why i have a distaste towards it.
I've only played arround 6 hours of Darkwood and through this very limited experience I find that Normal difficulty is just for a casual type of player, or for new players, I'm in the latter category, I feel it serves no purpose other than introducing the world mechanics and gameplay style to then scale into the harder versions
edit: I was wrong. I play on normal.
I started on hard, but as i dont play too many of the more action orientated games....
(tactical CRPG and maangement/colony sims are more my games and point and click these days) i reverted to normal.
This is the only game where i did this:D

I recently started playing, I usually like a challenge and wanted to play on hard, but I started on normal instead... and died 2 times in the first 3 days, the game is actually pretty difficult if you dont know what youre doing or how to avoid encounters

If this was like a 6-8h game, maybe id play it on hard, but im not gonna bother with this one, I dont want to burn out !!!

I think a minority of people can enjoy permadeath that well. It's something you do as a challenge after learning the game to a good enough degree. Starting a new game with permadeath is the best recipe for burn out, and this game has a very good story and gameplay, so burn out would be rather tragic to happen.
I agree with you, Meat.

Having finished the game recently, I now understand how it was meant to be played on Hardcore, most of my deaths were me being overconfident, the one time I almost died without any control was because of the ghosts at night that kept attacking me

Could I have avoided it if I had a torch or a flare near me making light ?

Yeh, flare or lamp, there's always a way to avoid or solve that kind of situation, or any other kind of situation.
