Darkwood 1.4 public testing - RC 30 21.12.2023
Hi there!

We've been working on a new update for Darkwood for quite some time now. Due to extensive changes in the back end of the game, we've decided it would be best if we did a public testing of this release. Please mind that this update does not bring new content - it's focused on optimizing and polishing the game, especially for gamepads.

If you'd like to help us out weed out the remaining bugs which we haven't caught yet, you can access the 1.4 version right now following the guide below:

WARNING! Participating in testing will most likely break your existing save games, so back them up before doing anything. Proceed at your own risk!

To access the testing branch, right-click on Darkwood in the Steam client's library and select "Properties". Navigate to the "Betas" tab and select "publictesting" from the drop-down menu. That's it! Your game will update to the latest testing version.

Changes and improvements in Darkwood 1.4:
- Updated Unity version from 5.5.3 to 2021.3. This means (hopefully) less software and hardware conflicts, better performance and less crashes.
- Fixed the vast majority of known bugs. We couldn't fix them all (but believe me, we tried!)
- Fixed many issues with newer Mac systems.
- Fixed many issues on Linux.
- Fixed achievements not unlocking for many players.
- Added better 4k support.
- Added the Automagical Save File Corruption Recovery System. If your saves get corrupted / deleted, the system will try to use the back ups without any input from your part.
- Added Steam Cloud support. (not available during testing)
- Many performance improvements.
- If you have a key to open a door, the default action for this door will be to use the key, so you don't need to open up the context menu anymore.
- Some minor changes to the Prologue.
- Added French localization.
- The gamepad control scheme has received many improvements.
- [Windows] The game is now built with IL2CPP backend-scripting. This means much improved CPU performance!
- [Windows & Linux] Changed rendering API to Vulkan. This means better GPU performance!

- Reworked control bindings
Here are the Xbox One Controller bindings:
- Primary Action : A
- Aiming : LT
- Secondary attack: RB
- Run : B
- Vault : B
- Dodge: Right Stick Button
- Reload: Left Stick Button
- Inventory : Y
- Skill Menu: LB
- Player Menu: View Button
- Far look: RT
- Cycle: D-Pad Left
- Effects Cycle: D-Pad Right
- Open context menu: X

Changes for gamepad mode:
- Player character auto jumps over objects while running.
- Objects selection has been reworked.
- Context menu has been reworked.
- Inventory: Objects selection has been reworked.
- Throwing objects mechanics have been reworked.
- Autorun has been removed.
- Inventory, Workshop, Saw : UI has been reworked.

Bug fixes:
- Floating text are now frame independent so they don't disappear before they are fully shown if you have a very low framerate.
- The bug with player being not able to pick the flamethrower in the epilogue has been fixed (sorry Markiplier!).
- Fixed disappearing Bride.
- Bug with the Doctor saying "I don't know how to do that" loop after alt attack with a torch has been fixed.
- [OSX] Fixed red videos.
- Hopefully fixed stuttering during exploring some people have been experiencing.
- Fixed player getting stuck after the cellar dream.
- Fixed wrong calculation of damage modifiers.
- The player can no longer open the map while in the main menu.
- Squished texts for some containers have been fixed.
- Fixed many typos.
- Forest sounds starting abruptly playing ignoring the volume slider has been fixed.
- Fixed not being able to interact with anything in rare cases after the prologue intro.
- Some other bugs we might have forgot to write down.

- EDIT 11.08.2023 - the testing was paused for a long time, but has now resumed with RC21. Unforunately, we had to revert IL2CPP and Vulkan support as the issues caused by those things were too much to handle.

Does odd meat now give the armor buff instead of making you take more damage?

Yes, damage calculation based on armor buffs / debuffs should be correct now.

Dear developers, will creative workshops be opened? We have a deep love for this game, we are eager to have a creative workshop, so that he can have more different feelings and develop further

I also would love to know if a new game or any DLC for Darkwood is in development!? I love Darkwood and would like to see more content from your studio in the future! Games like this are few and far between (:

Cool ! Finished my first playthrough recently, will be nice to do a 2nd one after update 1.4 final is released.

I get blackscreen if I start a new game, but can load my old existing saves(can't interact with people or oven, though). It seems the game fails to load the prologue cutscene but the music is there and I can see and move the mouse curser ball.

And btw since you're doing a lot of text correction, typos etc. could you delete remains of the non-existent quest lines, like the musician requesting pig meat etc.

RC11 is now available!

Changes
- Reworked gamepad interactions with objects in the world.
- Added Nintendo Switch Pro and Google Stadia icons.
- Some objects are not selectable on the controller, like white poisonous mushrooms.
- Filling generator with gasoline now available with A and Right Trigger with a controller.

Fixes
- Fixed permanent black screen in many dialogues.
- Fixed many objects in the world that could not be interacted with a gamepad.
- Fixed visual issues in dialogues and cooking / skills menu.
- Fixed videos.
- Fixed visual issues for 3d objects in epilogue.
- FIxed torch light glitching out sometimes.
