First of all, while you are in the first area (Dry Meadows) you should explore everything and loot every tiny bit of stuff, and then start buying the shovel components / workbench upgrades from the trader / from wolf man.
To increase your money (reputation) i suggest you alwayss sell Flashlights and batteries because the Lantern is a much better alternative to the flashlight, because you can use a weapon / item while ti casts light, as long as you haave it in the Hotbar, this thing you cannot do with flashlights so in my opinion they are just better to sell.
Also sell all those items that make you run longer like bread, eggs, white circular pills, they are useless and better invested as money from trader.
By the time you arrive in area 2 (Silent Forest) hideout you SHOULD have the stuff to upgrade the workbench to a level high enough to craft the Shovel and also have all the items to craft it (1 shovel blade from merchant, 1 stick from a savage you kill, and some duct tape i think, also from merchant, total expense should be around 500 for this, you can also buy Toolbox but also find it, depends on luck this last part though. You can make this kind of money even in area 1 if you find all shiny stones and sell batteries, flashlights, meat...
I did like this in both game runs i did and it always led to me having shovel as soon as i was in hideout 2.
Also, bear traps are very strong because they do high damage, they 1-shot dogs and big dogs ,damage stick savage for 75% health disabling him and one-shots weaker ones (stone savage and punch savage). You need to put the bear traps in a narrow place like a doorway or after a window so enemies are forced to go there because it's too narrow to avoid it.
If there's some cluster of enemies craaft and use Molotov, direct hit can kill ANY enemy in the game with the subsequent damage over time, and also will deny passage where the fire is lit.
You can use Torch + Gasoline Canister to make flame walls, you pour canister and move and it will create a gasoline line on ground, then hit the line with torch and it will burn for some time, burning any enemy on it and denying passage.
I hope this has been useful, good luck.
Plank has only one good thing: that it is the fastest staggering weapon, stick savage is slow to attack mostly and with plank you can attack him all the time before he attacks you and reset his attack charge because plank staggers, however plank has little damage and against multiple savages is not very good.
I never really use it, better use molotovs against enemy clusters, because with the gasoline you pour on the ground and light from a canister, you can make 2-3 molotovs which are the same thing but thrown and also do splash damage when they explode.
Of course if you SWIM in gasoline and have 10 full canisters then go ahead but it is not really efficent compared to molotovs.
I do swim in gasoline and i tend to barricade in 1 small room usually. Throwing molotovs around may just wreck all my defences. But next time when i see them break a window barricade, i m gonna pour some gasoline in front of it and set it on fire. They jump inside and quickly die while i kite them around my 4x4 metre room lol. A lot of the time i tend to miss with molotovs somehow or misstime it. And quite often there is like an angry mob of chompers trying to break 1 window or 1 particular door.
I don't think that's true. With a full gasoline tank you can make exactly 2 molotovs,as opposed to 3-4 lines (which can go through closed doors) connected to respective puddles on the ground. They make great traps, but on the other hand molotovs are better and more suitable for combat.
PS
Developers should fix gas consumption for molotovs. It's not realistic to say the least, that a bottle of molotov requires more gasoline (0.5) than an exploding barrel (0.35).
