Can someone explain Freelance mode to me?
Hello

I am a new player, and enjoying the game very much, however I'll admit to being confused about what Freelance mode is and how it fit's into the game.

Campaign I grasp, set number of missions, different mechs available to you, try to finish the missions and get to the end.

However of course, I am constantly earning money as I play, win or lose I usually come out with something and if I am right it looks like I can spend that money on Freelance mode, unlocking pilots etc... and of course buying lore and other bits through the other options.

But yeah, I am somewhat confuzzled to what I should or shouldn;t be spending money on and what Freelance mode is... can anyone help?

Thanks

Freelance mode is there to give you challenging custom missions where you define what gear you take in, and how difficult it'll be. It's for after you've beaten the campaign. You can see it as "the story of other Brigadors."

Ok dokey, and is the money side of the game purely for Freelance mode?

Yeah, that and some story bits. :)

Freelance, imho, is where the game opens up. The campaign is more like a set of puzzles - you have four loadouts to choose from, and you have to figure out how to solve one single mission. Great fun, don't get me wrong, but it's vastly different from Freelance mode.

Freelance, meanwhile, is where you can put together almost any kind of mech/loadout you want, and then you try to do maps sequentially - and here the game shines, in terms of challenge, flexibility, and learning to really control your mechs. It's absolutely incredible, and you should check it out when you're ready! Good times.

The campaign is a set of challenge missions designed to introduce you to a variety of weapons and vehicles, as well as set you up with enough cash to get started.

Freelance is where you Liberate Solo Nobre Tonight.

Freelance also lets you go on a revenge spree on low difficulties if you just want some catharsis.

On the opposite end of those prostars trying for "Oh my god, some insane person just did a Closed Cakset, Alarm free, 100% Garrison/Commander/Orbital run... with a Mog."

Is taking poor sad sack Norman Osberger, and seeing just how little of Solo Nobre is left standing when you let him drive a Huss through Zero/Zero difficulty.

The idea is to give the player full control over how they want to play. The pilots modulate difficulty directly-- how strong the enemy spawns are. Vehicles and guns modify difficulty indirectly-- some vehicles and weapons are objectively better than others. The Operations are just assemblages of levels for you to play through as a group, and completing an entire run instead of leaving for the spaceport early will earn you more money.

Intel gives you some actionable info about units you're fighting like their HP values, as well as some extra writing fluff. Lore is purely for the fun of it-- if you want to read more about the game world just buy some lore.

The lore is my favorite unlock, honestly. So are the various stories you can read in the descriptions - good stuff!
